I had some leftover bamboo plywood from a cabinet project and decided to upgrade my Vepr 54R.
Limbsaver pad to dampen things a bit.
Add lightening cut to expose inner core and grain direction change.
Bookmatch the grain so that the inner core pattern align
Handguard is FAL wood adapted to a Carolina Shooters rail.
Fortunately the color tone was pretty compatible and didn't need a change.
I think the horizontal ribbing of the handguard plays rather nicely off the horizontal grain of the bamboo. That was rather fortuitous.
Primary glue up reinforced with biscuits in hidden spots.
So many custom one-time-use DIY jigs and so many opportunities for failure.
Determine method of attack, measure 5 times, think some more, check measurements, re-evaluate your method, triple check your tool setup, play act your tool movement, do a test run on a piece of scrap, check your measurements again..... and now cut.
The material plays pretty nice with standard carbide tooling. Minimal tear-out and splintering.
The final finish is just a clear coat. It hasn't been stained in any fashion.
