I plan on using the side rail mount here in a few days.

Midwest Industries has a mount.  It's the only one I know of that looks worth a damn.

In for other, better options.

And why would you cut the barrel unless you want to thread it?

I have a SAR 3 and use the MI mount. Also threaded the barrel myself so I could perm a muzzle brake.

I have one (SAR-1 in 7.62x39 mm).  I bought it way back (from a seller in Shotgun News) when they were about $300.  The side rail mount is like any other found on a common AK.  I use it to mount my Kobra red dot.  Since the Kobra came with it's own mount, I figured....."Why not?"  Back than, IIRC I paid about $200 for it.

Aloha, Mark

Similar, but has a longer rail portion. I like mine. Lock up is great, and the quick detach works as it should.
Haven't checked if it holds zero after remounting tho.

I used a posp 6x42 until I realized my sar1 was best as a light weight kiss iron rifle.  I do agree with others that the MI mount is solid.  I have the integral ring model on my vepr 20" x54 with a tac30.

RS Regulate mount is a good choice for using the side rail.  SAR-1 on the left.

I have a SAR1 and generally just use a Kobra red dot sight on it.

RS Regulate mounts are really nice. I've been using a Gen 1 on my Saiga SGL31 for going on 10yrs with an Aimpoint ML2.  AKOU often has nice package deals for mounts with optics. I like RS more than MI.

ETA-Have used the mount with no issues at times on my SAR1 and SAR2.

If for a magnified optic I would use the midwest mount that uses the side rail. If for a red dot I like the ultimaks for that. I have 2 SAR1s, one is debanned and original looking, the other Has the barrel cut to 14.5 with a permanent vortex flash hider and a front sight gas block combo with a magpul handguard. Nice set up if you want a modernized AK.

My RS regulate with red dot works great on my SAR-1.

I mostly use it on another AK and shoot iron sights though.

I've owned them all.

The M.I. is a good unit, but hands down the RS it the Best of the Bunch.

More mounting & Adjustment options.

RS regulate(Side rail), Ultimak(railed gas tube), or Attero(replaces rear sight leaf) are all good options.
