Hello All,

I was looking for a kit to build and forgot I had an M70.  I got excited and took it down.  Original barrel and it looked amazing.  I went to check the barrel and I was greeted by what looked like epoxy.  I don't remember buying this kit, but it sounds like something I would do, I'm not afraid to change a barrel.  I put the cleaning rod down the barrel and it seems to be filled to the half way mark.  I did not try to drill out the obstruction because it appeared to be substantial.   To be honest the existing barrel looks amazing on the kit.  I was even thinking about hanging it on the wall the way it is.

The question is...what is the obstruction and can it be removed.  I strongly suspect it can't be, but I decided this would be the best place to ask...you know...just in case there is a simple solution that I am not aware of.

Thank you all in advance for you time and knowledge.  I don't know why I get emotion sometimes when light hits metal...I know its just chemicals in my brain...but they are amazing chemicals.
Stainless Steel, metal addict.

Try using the threaded end of the cleaning rod and see if it presses in it. If it does, I would bet that it is cosmoline (storage grease).

Hello,

I did try putting the cleaning rod thru. I wish it was cosmoline.  I've removed tons of grease.

I've seen old dried out cosmoline that was almost white and looked like candle wax, but harder and almost chalky. Try soaking it in lacquer thinner and see if it dissolves.
