Finally picked up an SKS. 1978 406 factory and all numbers matching.

Only thing is, somebody drilled and tapped some holes in it. In the above picture, the holes are about 71mm apart centerline to centerline. On the below picture, the hole spacing is around 103mm. The holes in the front are on the same center axis. They are all the same size, approx. 3mm or .125 in, maybe a little smaller.

Some form of scope mount?

That's a reasonable guess.  There are a number of scope mounts that require drilling and tapping the left side.  Galati iirc was one company.

The serial number +56 only works for factory 26 guns is what I have been told.

Most of the other arsenals were machine shops that would fill in to supplement the supply from factory 26.
As I understand it , anyway.

You can only accurately date Arsenal 26’s because of them using a German type serial number.
