I'm just getting back into the AK and realized that I have no way to carry any mags (other than my Chinese Vietcong style chest rig and E German 4 mag "purse" that I bought 30 years ago). I've got tons of pouches for my AR but nothing for the AK.
I'd like to use an AK in 2gun competitions but I dont want to carry my mags in my pockets. What do ya'll use and recommend? |

I use 5.45 and 74 mags extensively in 2G and Run n Gun. I run SR-25, FAL, and AR pattern mags too under the same belt and carriers. For those, I use the G-Code Scorpions. You will want to have molle if you're using the R1 Clips. On a PC, I run a v1 shaw concepts placard. They fit a little tight in there, but definitely work out. In a chest rig configuration, I use a velocity systems mayflower gen V and VI with the 5.56 inserts. On the mayflower though, you will need to place your magazines rounds up because the lug will complicate things on there.
I ahve little personal background in the 7.62x39 deal, but I know the G-Code scorpions work fine for those ina belt config. The esstacs can work, but the lugs make it a very tight fit. |

It came with 4 Weiger 5.56 mags when I bought it around 2003. I'm looking for something more tactical and faster on the draw. Like maybe something kydex that I can put on a belt but I'll settle for one of the taco style ones. |

Either a bag of some kind, in the soft case with the rifle or in a mil surplus 4 cell pouch (which is what I assume you are looking for) - if you hunt around you will find 4 cells at a good price (there are alot of 3 cell models too but I say go for 4). RTG gets them in and there are a bunch of other companies that sell them over time - now just might not be the best time to buy so have patience, its not a restricted item so it will be back.

View Quote That looks ok but I'm looking for something to wear on the belt where a reload can be grabbed in a hurry. I'll probably go with the HSGI TACO. |

I have a Chinese 6 mag chest pouch and some random 8 mag chest rig. These are fine as the 7.62 AK is a backup platform here. My son uses tacos on a plate carrier for his 5.45 AK. Were I to upgrade rigs, I'd probably be looking at the tacos since they work for 7.62 mags as well.

I use Tacos, that way I don't have to swap pouches when I swap rifles. They will accepts 7.62x39 AK mags in any orientation, bullets down or up and facing forward or back.

Does anyone have an idea why the Chinese made some chest rigs that held 6 AK magazines instead if the seemingly much more common 3 mag rigs? I got my 6 mag rig in the 1980s and have never run across another one since.

It's a 6 mag one with the 3 double mag pouches with dividers in each. I bought it in the early 90's. Looks 100% identical to the one ironhandjohn posted. The only markings on the back are in Chinese and a few red stamps with various numbers in red "87" and "02" probably inspector stamps or maybe factory/shop. I dont think I would want to run around the jungle too long with 6 loaded AK mags on this thing. I believe it's designed for only one human wave attack. |

Rob Ski has a video where he talked about a problem he ran into with the Tacos and storing the mag bullets down. The bullets sometimes catch on the exposed bungee cord on the front left of the pouch--stripping the round, or worse, spinning it up horizontal with the base of the cartridge still in the mag. Kinda kills your speed on an emergency reload. The G-Code Scorpions use a similar design but the bungee is lower and not exposed. I went w/ the scorpions for that reason but haven't really run them through the paces yet.

I just use surplus mag pouches. East German mostly for standard AK mags. I have several 5 cell pouches (Hungarian I think) that hold Galil surplus 35 round mags perfectly. They were like 3 or 4 dollars each if you bought 10.

Probably my favorite option I've across so far. Good retention, easy access, and lots of adaptability. |

FWIW I just buy surplus 4 cell com block mag pouches when I find them cheap / on sale.

G code scorpions on the belt and an esstac tall 7.62 placard on my plate carrier. Both work great.

For running and gunning in a 2 or 3-gun match I just need 1, maybe 2 spare mags on my belt that I can grab in a hurry one handed without fumbling with primitive buttons or clasps. Then losing the remaining mags while I sprint to the next fault line. If I end up storming the wire at Firebase Gloria, I'll carry the 6 mag Chinese chest rig or my 4-cell E. German AK mag purse. |

View Quote The G Codes on the belt are very fast for me and easy to re-index. I use it for both AR and AK mags. I've tried a bunch of other AK mag pouches and what I like most about the esstacs and G codes is that you can easily get a full grip on the mag. They're both uni-directional so you can have the mags oriented whatever way makes most sense for your reload grip. Just so you're aware, the esstacs are not made to be Ak mag pouches (they're just the standard 7.62x51 pouches). Locking tabs sometimes get caught up (nothing severe) when re-indexing. |

I just learned of these, been thinking about getting one to carry my mags for my RPK instead of just hanging a 4 cell pouch around my neck. I have seen a few variations, some for 30 round mags, some for RPK-74 mags. |

I finally received both the G-Code Scorpion and the HSGI Taco. Both seem to operate on similar design principal of the semi-rigid shell held together with the elastic band.
Both seem to hold my various AK mags bullets down no problem and I havnt had the mag's lugs catch yet during an extract. That is exactly what I was looking for: A way to carry 1-2 mags on my belt for easy one handed reloads. I like the way the HSGI looks a little better but the G-Code seems a little more rigid and have a more solid belt loop system so maybe will hold up better. Who knows. Loaded AK mags are heavy, especially the steel mags so time will tell how these hold up with me running around with them. |
