Using Wolf Poly 123gr. FMJ

2 y/o WASR 10

Ideally, I want to zero at 100m with the rear site in the "1" position, but I'm not sure I will have that much room to stretch out, so if I need to compromise and use a shorter range with the rear site in the "2" position, at what distance should I zero? I am seeing 21 yards, 25 yards / 23 meters suggested, but this much variance equates to big numbers at greater distances.

At your suggested distance, what would POI be with the rear site in the "1" position at 25 yards, 50 yards, and 100 yards? It would be dead on at 100m correct?

Thanks!

You can zero your rifle at 14 meters........15.3 yards.

The 7.62x39 doesn’t exactly have the greatest trajectory performance. I guess I’d suggest using yards instead of meters. At 100yds your 25yds zero should be about half an inch low but you’ll be dead on at 100yds. But at 200 yds you’ll be almost 7 inches low. For a 200yd zero you’ll be a little more than 3 inches high at 100yds and your 25yd zero will be about 1/3 an inch high. If you want to use meters your 100m zero will still be .03inches low with 25m zero .3 inches low.

Honestly when you consider the ballistics of the cartridge you need to accept a 25m/yd zero that is within half and inch of your desired 100/200 zero. You’re never going to get a clean 25/100 zero.

Think I'll do 24-25 yards at "2" setting and confirm later at 50 and 100 yards on the "1" setting. Thanks.

Initially I zeroed like Russians do at 100m/110yds. Then I saw the video linked above.
Knowing my rifle is properly zeroed with real world confirmation of the slider settings out to 500, I wanted to see if this info was right..
So I set up 14m/15.5yds. I'll be damned if it was right on.
This was very good for elevation zero. I prefer 50 yards for windage zero.
With the ballistic apps we have today, this will be fairly easy to figure out the near zero for your 200m far zero.
Having the near zero is very handy. I remember elk hunters would come to camp with a target of a 300 yard zero fired at 25 yards. The reason were that once in camp they could check their 300 yards zero by shooting at 25yards then comparing targets. Great technique for when range to recheck zero distance is limited!

This is how i zero all of my AK's in x39

To zero the AK, set your rear sight to the “2” setting and zero the rifle at 25 yards (not meters), or 24 yards with ammunition that advertises a muzzle velocity of 2350 FPS. Be sure to verify your zero at 100 meters with the “1” setting.
Use the battle setting for plinking and defensive shooting out to 300 meters and expect to get hits within a 7? diameter circle around your point-of-aim. This is your best “set it and forget it” setting.
Use the “1” setting for shooting at 50 yard and 100 yard rifle ranges.
Use the “2” setting for shooting at targets known to be in the 200 yard / meter range. It works perfect for 25 yard indoor ranges. Use it as your “set-it-and-forget-it” setting if all of your shooting will be within 200 meters (urban or jungle environment).
Reserve the use of the “3” setting for when you are shooting at a target know to be at a range of 300 meters.

Thanks all.

No, its not over yet so hold the 'thanks'. Put your rear sight on '1'. Have your front sight tool ready. Shoot about 1" low at 25 yards by adjusting the front sight. Move to the 100 yard range and shoot for zero, adjusting the front sight as needed. If you can get ten shots on the center in a 5" group at 100 you are basically zeroed.
Now to shoot at 200 yds, simply move the rear sight to '2' and so-on.

50 yards is pretty close to 100 meters and 25 yards is pretty close to 200m with x39 AKs according to my ballistic calculators.

This is what I do. Zero at 25 yards on setting 2, confirm at 100 meters on setting 1.

That's what I do since my range only goes to 100y.  Close range zeros always print way off for me at longer ranges due to the amplification of minor error that you don't notice at close range. A 25 yard zero (even with hold over or under) is good to get you on paper, but I don't trust it.

With a 6" round "Shoot N See" target at 100y, it's easy to lollipop the target on the front sight post (6 O'clock hold) and get the group to center the target.  I zero my red dot the same way.  Of course, that also could be off at 200y until you verify, but it's less of an error the further out you can zero.
