yeah, the data from one can be copied as data to the other.  

you need to convert almost any video file into a .VOB and it's associated files and folders before burning them to a DVD to get them to play as a DVD.  

VSO DivX to DVD is a good program.  You can get a free download from the actual company but it's got a trial period.  It will convert most videos and does so at about a 1 to 1 ratio meaning a two hour movie will take two hours to convert.  It will make the correct folders and files and you just drag and drop to your DVD burning program and the burn will usually take 3 minutes with a 16x burner.
