Thanks for the report. Looks like this stuff delivers! I don't need pinpoint accuracy, minute of bad guy works just as well when I am training.

Nice review, thanks. We know it seems to work for 5.45 ARs, what about AK74s? Specifically a Bulgarian
|
|
Yeah, anyone have a ROMAK2 or other Rommy to test it out of? |
|
|
I have a 5.45 SAR-2, someone send me a tin, I'll be glad to test it. |
||
|
Haha, in that case I'll run a tin through my Romak 2 if people are feeling generous |

As others have pointed out it's good to hear the Hotshot is at least decent in the 5.45 upper. It would indeed be instructive to learn what it does in AKs. Am afraid I won't have any range time though, until after the sale is over

I wanted some non-corrosive though. |

I kinda like it though, because I'm in WV!! |

I kinda like it though, because I'm in WV!! It has not arrived yet, and I always help unload the large shipments if I am around. There have been bigger. Essentially, in my case ¢/rd was ~ the same for either Russian from Aim or HotShot from Century. I just wanted some non-corrosive for those times when I would not be putting many rounds down range. I am not anal about cleaning if my life does not depend on it; it continues to run; and corrosion is not a concern. I really like the Bulgarian and would be perfectly satisfied w/ a smaller order of HotShot and more Bulgarian. It was just simpler to order more HotShot since I was placing an order anyway. One concern I have about stocking up on 5.45 like I have is that my barrel will not survive long enough to use it all. I have 2 spare 5.45 stripped bolts but wonder how long the barrel will last w/ proper maintenance. 5.45 AR barrels or AK74 barrels tweaked for AR’s could be scarce in the future, or could be as plentiful as 30 year old recluses watching porno on their computer in their parents’ basement. Who knows? |

Sorry for not getting to this quicker. I put about 100 rounds of this stuff through my Bulgy AKS-74 today. No keyholing, and it performed flawlessly.

bsf, your AR upper is custom right?? Not one of the S&W ones?? Is yours chromed?? I think 10k of 5.45 would last me a life time! Hell, I call storing up 1000rds for each gun! Exept for the AK, then it's 2K.

Went ahead and ordered a tin of the 68 grain hotshot before sale ends for my 74 Kit that I need to finish. I've got 6K now (some bulgy some russian), maybe get a few more tins over the next few months. Heck I only shoot once every few months, so what I got should last a good while.

So, after reading the Century disclaimer, I'm wondering who makes a 5.45mm chambered gun with a 1:9/1:10 twist anyway?
ETA- Most of my online research indicates that all the real concerns over keyholing 5.45 seems to involve Century Tantals (and their U.S. made barrel) regardless of the bullet weight/length. -YMMV |
|
OK, last day of the Special so I went ahead and ordered 5tins based on the favorable reports so far. I figure 5.45x39 could become scarce real fast if we see some future ammo import bans, "military caliber" bans, or outragious ammo tax (not trying to fear monger folks, I'm just saying ). I will post a range report as soon as possible.

So, being NC, you guys feel it's a better deal at 20% more expensive than corrosive?
|
|
I've got 3 tins ordered, another board member got 5 tins.
Looking foward to burning some up. At $0.125 a round shipped,it's the best deal for me right now. |

So, being NC, you guys feel it's a better deal at 20% more expensive than corrosive? Check your math. With the sale price (hundred bucks a tin of 800 rds) the Hotshot is about the same price as the Bulgarian. AIM charges shipping, Century does not if the order is $500 +. If you're a long ways from AIM the milsurp could actually end up being more expensive than the N/C. |
|
My math is fine, since shipping is a different figure to each buyer.
Shipping aside, you feel it's worth a 20% premium for NC? |
|
Well, I can't disregard the shipping since it costs me actual, real money and makes the AIM Bulgy 12.9 cents per round to me. Obviously everyone else's MMV depending on where they live. The CAI Hotshot comes to 12.5 cents a round. Which is no biggy, but normally N/C is always more expensive than corrosive.
Not for now, and of course it'll be higher when this particular sale ends. And yes, when cleaning time is short the N/C is worth more to me! Ditto if the time comes to resell some of the stash. Oh well, best to get as much of whatever we can now, just to be on the safe side. I remember the dry years of the Karter '70s, and this new guy ain't gonna be any better. |

Looks like they extended the sale until the end of the month! Wahoo!

I like ammo.
I need new windows in my house. Decisions...decisions... |

I just jumped in with both feet! We'll see how it shoots in my SLR105...

As promised, my report;
I put 100 rounds of the 5.45 HotShot down range through my Interarms Tantal this past weekend. This is my experience. As always - YMMV. All rounds functioned flawlessly with no failures of any kind. I fired at targets from 25yrds to 100yrds with absolutely no indication of any "keyholes" At 25yrds, standing, I could easily empty a magazine into a 3" circle, rapid fire. For aimed shots (also standing, no support) I was shooting 2.75" groups at 25yrds. During the same session, under the exact same conditions I was shooting Golden Tiger with 1.75" groups at 25yrds. A noticeable difference. The laquer on the cases is inconsistanlty applied ranging from almost nothing to thickly covered with drip marks. I examined all 100 fired cases and found three with split necks. However, I found no other indications of excessive pressure problems (no blown primers, no primer flow at the indent, no stretch marks, etc.) At 100yrds the groups ranged from 10" to 12" but all were good groups centered on the target, again no keyholes. This ammo seemed no more dirty than the Golden Tiger. Clean-up did not take any longer. This is not match ammo, more like "minute-of-BadGuy". I did not have any problems that gave me concern. I am considering ordering more just to have a good supply of NC plinking and blasting ammo but I am concerned by some reports in other threads. Any other experiences??? |
|
I shot another 300 rounds Hot Shot 68 grain today in a Krebs AK 74s .No problems whatsoever 6 to 7 " groups with iron sights at 100 meters. Cheap blasting ammo at 12.5 cents per round and none corrosive. I tried the chamber test and some did not seat all the way with your FINGER ,but the rifle goobled them up with no problem.

Is the sale still on this month? Yep My rep just called me with a heads-up on this sale. Century is down to 9,000 rounds of the 5.45mm HotShot. Actually, make that 7,400 rounds . |

Just to be clear, I do not work for Century Arms Int'l. Starting to feel like I'm paying someone's salary there though .......
|
|
I was able to add 1000 tins. They normally fix that when they run low for it to say temporarily unavailable if it gets the low and they don't have enough stock. I think they have plenty. I'm sure people have ordered 15 tins since you posted that also. Still there.

Seems like a standard ploy to get some people off the fence. Maybe the customer servie rep meant 9k "tins" were left.

Woulda been really nice of him to tell me the 7.62x39 HotShot was being pulled from this month's sale Have found in the past though CAI can be a little slow in updating their site. Not as bad as SOG or Samco, but nowhere near as good aas AIM ...... |

I just tried to place an order from my rep. for more of this
Her words; SOLD OUT |

Well shit. So I have to eat my words then? Nah, that's OK –– only natural to distrust some vendors after the piracy that's been goin' on since the Obamination occurred. Guess my rep was shooting straight with me, but still kinda ticked he didn't give a heads-up on the premature termination of the 7.62x39 sale ....... Especially after the last three orders we put in. Only a few companies have much customer loyalty in the gun business, it sometimes seems! |
