i just got a kabar tdi law enforcement knife and was wondering about carrying it for edc
i have my ccw permit but i dont think that the missouri permit covers knives
the blade is 2 5/16" long with an overall length of 5 5/8"
does anybody know the legality of concealing a fixed blade in MO?

i think i may have figured it out...

- 571.030.
1. A person commits the crime of unlawful use of weapons if he or she knowingly:

(1) Carries concealed upon or about his or her person a knife, a firearm, a blackjack or any other weapon readily capable of lethal use; or...

(4) Exhibits, in the presence of one or more persons, any weapon readily capable of lethal use in an angry or threatening manner; or

8) Carries a firearm or any other weapon readily capable of lethal use into any church or place where people have assembled for worship, or into any election precinct on any election day, or into any building owned or occupied by any agency of the federal government, state government, or political subdivision thereof; or...

(10) Carries a firearm, whether loaded or unloaded, or any other weapon readily capable of lethal use into any school, onto any school bus, or onto the premises of any function or activity sponsored or sanctioned by school officials or the district school board.

2. Subdivisions (1), (3), (4), (6), (7), (8), (9) and (10) of subsection 1 of this section shall not apply to or affect any of the following: [law enforcement, military, judges, carry permit holders, etc. This exemption applies only to 571.030, not to 571.020]

so yes ccw in MO does cover carrying of a knife

Yep you figured it out.

Also, note that the "prohibited places" only prohibit guns, and not knives or the other weapons that are exempted by CCW...

So you need a CCW permit in order to carry a fixed blade concealed?

I don't have any direct experience with Missouri laws in this respect, but generally speaking, fixed blade knives are considered "weapons" rather than "tools" and would therefore require a permit to carry concealed.  Statutes often refer to "dirks" and "daggers", which are fixed blade knives.

One thing to keep in mind with knives is that there is no state preemption in Missouri so localities can have more stringent laws than the state. There are some localities with 2.5 inch limits.

I think Kirkwood is one of those with crazy-small length limits.

Yes. The Concealed Carry permit exempts the holder from the concealed carry law. Within the Concealed Carry law is an exemption for standard pocket knives with a blade no more then 4".

Kirkwood's knife law is no more then 1-1/2" blade length. Again, a person with a CCW is excempt.

I don't believe there is a state preemption for knives so you could still be charged under a locality's laws.

They can try.

571.030. 1. A person commits the crime of unlawful use of weapons if he or she knowingly:

(1) Carries concealed upon or about his or her person a knife, a firearm, a blackjack or any other weapon readily capable of lethal use; or

4. Subdivisions (1), (8), and (10) of subsection 1 of this section shall not apply to any person who has a valid concealed carry endorsement issued pursuant to sections 571.101 to 571.121 or a valid permit or endorsement to carry concealed firearms issued by another state or political subdivision of another state.

ETA: I will throw in the definition of a knife as found here:

571:010 (12) "Knife", any dagger, dirk, stiletto, or bladed hand instrument that is readily capable of inflicting serious physical injury or death by cutting or stabbing a person. For purposes of this chapter, "knife" does not include any ordinary pocketknife with no blade more than four inches in length;

and here is the wording of the preemption..., no mention of knies.  source
