OK Gang, here is my take on Single Point mounting for a Retro Son Tay weapon.

Since the real Single Point mount is no where to be found (other than one lucky forum member ) I wanted something that was as low profile and as near to the look as the original.

I started with an Aimtech Weaver mount.

And Weaver 1'' low mount rings.

And with a bit of Dremel work on the mount to clear the scope bell its as near to the GAU-5A/A that my old Infantry school buddy Frank Closen carried on the Raid.

All I need now is some Retro electrician tape!

I'm thinking of getting another one of the mounts and cutting it down even more and removing all of the unused weaver mounting points in order to make it as near as the Single Point mount as possible.

Later,

D. Mark

Thanks,

Alot of the mounts out there will place the scope too high.  This setup does bring it down, but still a bit further back than the original.

I have the scope zero for CQB ranges.  Anything pass that and I can still use the Iron Sights.

For the heck of it, I plan on using this firearm in my next 3-Gun match.

That looks great.  It is a lot better than my solution which is bulky and not close to the original.  I have some time so I think i will order some of those parts and replace this one with your set up.  I take it you just used aluminumblack or paint to refinshes the portion of the mount you ground off?  Thanks for the post and good job!

Very similar to what I did for a mount for my Armson. Same rings too:

Yup, just paint.

Here is my idea to shave down the mount more.

Also, somebody sent me a IM about my comment "Retro Electrician Tape."  The Singlepoint mount used straps to hold the scope that were sort of weak.  The Raiders wrapped the straps with tape to make sure that they held.

Since we're talking about the Single Point mount, here is a pic of the real deal.

That picture is the only real one I have seen.  Yours is about as close to that as you can get with current products, especially if you finish up the cutting on the mount.

I got the parts you listed from Midway then used a hand file and hacksaw to cut it down like the last photo you posted.  It took less than an hour to do.  I mounted up a different Single Point (this one is a new green dot with a cloudy front dome) for test fitting and I think it looks pretty good, a lot better than the other one I was using.  It sits lower and is not as heavy.  So, it will be off to USA for anodizing the mount gray or I may just spray it.  I may try to find some small nuts to replace the thumb screws seen in the bottom photo.  Here it is.

Now you all have made me feel bad, I have to modify mine.  It just doesn't look right!

Outstanding!

Let me know if you locate smaller replacement nuts for the thumb screws.
