I recently came across a New In Box colt sp1 Serial Number 5,  The rifle is has all the original paper work and box from Colt along with strap and cleaning kit and mags and even the orginal reciept dated in 1966,  It appears the original owner was part of colt managment and he purchased the rifle for himself, and never used it.  The rifle itself is flawless and looks like it was made yesterday.  How much is this rifle worth and how much could I expect to get if selling it?

thanks

That would be the opinion of a qualified auction house... not really for 80% of arfcom members to really know...

I'm sure that you'll find some knowledgable people ... just wait.

Around $5000-7500+.

New in Box Colt Sp1 prices:

1964-1966 $3000-7000+ depending on year built, box condition and supporting documents if it was owned by Colt employees.

1967-1972  $1850-3200

1973-1983 $1500-2000

Sp1 carbines new in Box run $1800+

Colt is not making post  AWB  rifles for the public and will never make Sp1 style rifles again(the tooling was sold off in 1991)....so you're dealing with items that are now collector firearms.

Used SP1's made after 1972 will likely stay in the $750-1000 range.....expect to pay a couple $100 more for pre 1972 rifles.  There are more and more people collecting pre 1972 Sp1's lately.

Less than that. Oversize screw up front (not even pivot pin), 1:12 barrel. No deflector, No FA. Yuk.

I really, really do not understand why someone wants yesterdays technology today, and is willing to pay more.

I have some classic 286 computers if anyone wants to pay $3000 for them....

Yeah, who wants "yesterday's technology". All them M1 Garands, M1 Carbines, M1911A1s, etc should be melted down and the steel used for some more modern. Then we can move on to the old muscle cars like Camaros, Mustangs, Hemi Chargers, etc.  Hell, while we're at it, why don't we just raze all the Smithsonian buildings and put some usefull office towers in there, too?

The key phrase was "AND IS WILLING TO PAY MORE". [EDIT ADD] M1 Garands, M1 Carbines, M1911A1s, were all actually used military weapons. SP1 was not. I agree, if SP1 actually saw combat use it would be worth a lot. But it is NOT even a semi-auto version of the M16 that was actually used in military. It is a bastardized version. A Bushmaster more closely resembles what troops really use.

BTW, I still have one 286 left, and just found a bunch of 8088s.... Paypal preferred.

You have no guarantee that any given M1Garand, M1 Carbine, or M1911A1 was ever actually used in combat. The point is that a Colt SP-1 with a single digit SN IS a collectable and as such has more value than run of the mill NIB AR, regardless of whether or not you personally agree. If for whatever reason you are unable to understand that, I guess that's just too bad.

Oh jeez.....  maybe before the ban.  Yes, I know the BS about Colt not making these again...yada yada... but even during the ban I bought an EXCELLENT 1971 SP1 for $900, and there were TONS sold in the $1100-1200 range.

This being serial number 5... I am sure it is worth a LOT more to a collector... but your general prices are BOGUS.... IMHO.

Oh I know, I funded a Colt M16 selling off my useless SP1s and other pre-ban stuff at 4-5x what they were worth. Already sold several 286 computers too. I love collectors....

You see... BOOMER is the one who decides what has value and what doesn't.  Whether or not you personally agree with that...... is of little value.  He is always right, and has the final word.  Your feeble opinion is worthless.  If for whatever reason you are unable to understand that, I guess that's just too bad.

Some guns do have collector status... I doubt an original Stg.44 would sell for a hundred bucks because it's used & old technology.

First flag that went up is: "I recently came across a New In Box colt sp1 Serial Number 5, The rifle is has all the original paper work and box from Colt along with strap and cleaning kit and mags and even the orginal reciept dated in 1966,".

dude, the first SP1's for sale were 1964, not some fuckin' reciept dated 1966 as you stated.

second: Colt-653 is stroking you. He is quoting NFA firearms, not colltectable Colts. IE. he doesn't know what the fuck he is talking about.

third: The damn AWB is history!

fourth: An original SP1, unfired is worth about 1.5k, at most. Which is an unmolested SP1 Coltguard. Do you even know what that is?

As for all you other motherfuckers, charging 25 dollars, still, for a NIW AR mag, have you got a fucking clue the AWB is dead?

coltcarbine

Do you think that it is possible this gun sat on a dealers shelf for 2 years before selling??? When the AR-15 became avalible for civilian sale, it was not a popular gun, I amagine this being in part to to the fact, people interested in this weapon were also able to by it's ful auto conterpart NIB.. So it is very likely that SP1 #5 sat for years before selling...

I would say that do to a low serial numer the rifle would be worth no more than $2000 to a collector..

Well seeing as how I collect Colt Sp1 rifles and Carbines I think I know a little more about their retail value than you do.

I'm not listing NFA items I'm listing new in the factory box with factory accessories Colt SP1 semi auto rifles and carbines.

If Colt 6520,6721, and 6920's are selling for $1000+ why would a 30+ year old Colt that is new in the box suddenly be worth $800-900? I can understand used Colt Sp1's in the $650-800 range but not a new in the box unit.

And Colt Factory M16's start at $10-12.5K....wish I could find some in the $3-5K range as I'd buy every single one of them at that price

It is very possible someone bought a 1964-1968 rifle new off the shelf anytime from when it was made till well into the 1970's. The Colt Sp1 were not large sellers till the mid 1970's so it could have sat at the shop for several years.

Good luck finding a new in the Box ColtGuard rifle for under $2500

Wow  just what I expected alot of people had a alot of wacky opinions on the value of this Colt .
The truth is I am the owner of  Colt SP1 00005.  I asked Alan to find what the buzz would be about a low number gun from Colt.  I bought this gun from the family of a fomer well known and respected Colt  technical respesentive during the Vietnam war .  D. A. Behrendt ,  His photo can be found on page 89 of the book Small Arms of the World. The gun is a 20 inch A1 with the box and paperwork of the employee purchase.  The receipt from the Colt Factory was dated 1966 .
A major manufacturer like Colt could make ,sell ,hold on to serial #'s for years  this was taken into his possession in 1966 according to the factory paperwork inside the box. I am the second owner of this gun since it was made.  I am selling it and I know this should be the EE but what can I say this post orignated here.  If their is anyone out there that can repect the collector value of this rifle  please e-mail me . Thank you.          John

Wow this thread turned ugly fast, if your not able to offer respectful advice don't post here!

However, I don't expect to be called a liar or insulted over the content of my posts!

As the proud owner of a mint 1965 SP1, I have a question. How much are you wanting to get for your 1963??

How about posting some nice close up pics.

I'm certainly no expert, but here goes....

From my sources, it's my understanding that the first 23 SP1's were actually manufactured in 1963 but not issued for distribution to the general public.  Colt kept those rifles and gave (sold?) them to executives, board members, etc.  Manufacture of AR15s for sale to the general public began in 1964 with serial numbers beginning #101.  Apparently serial numbers 24 through 99 were not used.  It's certainly possible that a 1963 manufactured rifle might not have been "sold" until after 1963.

A 1963 rifle would not be marked with an "A2" designation.  If this rifle is so marked, it's probably some sort of fabrication.

I think Colt might have also cataloged some early rifles under the moniker "Comanche" but was forced to alter the name because of copyright or trademark issues.  I don't know whether Colt ever manufactured any rifles with the "Comanche" name roll marked into the receiver.

Again, I'm not an expert.  I'm just trying to remember what I've learned in the past about the history of the commercial AR15.

If it is a genuine 1963 production rifle with corroborating paperwork, it would certainly be worth a substantial premium over standard NIB SP1 market prices.  I'd certainly offer $2,500 for it and maybe a wee bit more if I decided I wanted it badly enough.

As an aside....  a rifle is worth whatever a buyer is willing to pay for it.  If someone is willing to pay $3,000 for a rifle he or she wants and/or considers collectible, that's his or her decision to make.  That amount is what the rifle is worth to him or her.  I certainly think it's fair to throw out our opinions as to what a reasonable value might be, BUT I don't think it's fair to judge someone's intelligence on what he or she is willing to pay for a rifle or car or anything else.  I often wonder when I see a poster dismissing a buying decision or valuation judgment as "stupid" or "way too high," whether that poster is displaying a "sour grapes" attitude rather than a genuine and well thought out opinion.
