I see the future lawyer has learned his lessons well.

Leaving two people to bleed to death after chopping them up with a propellor then getting his brother to take the fall.

Nice family there.

He will be what's commonly referred to as a "Jailhouse Lawyer" and for good reason.

Too many people drink on the water, which is the last  place you want to be impaired.

Why is it always the innnocent victim(s) that die and the drunk motherfuckers live? Why is this cruel twist of fate so common?

Crap like this happens every year out here on the Colorado( mostly dipsh#ts from L.A area). I don't really like seeing all the police boats pestering every one on the river, but these people have to learn some how.

Tragic

If this happened at 2:40 AM, both boats should have been displaying running lights - unless the victims were anchored, in which case they should have been displaying an all-around white light.

Not to shift blame or detract from the negligence of the drunken idiots, but it's possible that this could have been averted by proper use of lights. (Then again, it's very possible the victims had visible lighting, and were still run over.)

I'm only making this observation, because in my experience, very few powerboaters make proper use of running/anchor lights.

I agree, well except for the "future lawyer" part. There have been a strangely large number of police officers killed in upstate New York in the past year and a half or so, mostly in shootings but one local officer was killed chasing a kid on a motorcycle. Generally Onondaga County isn't as tough as the surrounding rural Republican counties but I suspect they're going to make it ugly for this kid if they can.

Most of the "camps" on that lake are very very expensive.

This story kind of hits home.  I worked eight of the FOURTEEN lake fatalities in the past 19 months. (Lake Travis and Lake Austin)  Every damn one of them caused by someone like this guy.   Three of the bodies have not been recovered.   One was an 8-year-old girl riding in daddy's Baja that DISINTEGRATED at impact. (60mph +)

In this case since one boat overran the other the victims were more than likely caught by the prop/outdrive working at a fairly high RPM.  A horrible way to die.

I assumed the leo had his boat lights on from that.

Hmm ok...  I read the article twice and misread that part both times.

I know two different guys who have been rammed in similar situations. Both hit-and-runs. Luckily, no fatalities or serious injuries.

I hate government restrictions. Rather than more regulations (that will be ignored by stupid yahoos anyway), I think the key to safer boating is just to let ordinary people beat the shit out of the dickheads and then take their boats.

Double post for some reason.

There is a lot of screaming going on in the boating community in Texas.  Lots of folks are pushing mandatory training and licensing for boat operators.

Right now some yahoo can buy a 26ft Baja with twin V8's at noon and be driving the thing up the lake by 2pm without the slightest bit of familarization.  We kill and maim a lot of folks here.

Fucking powerboater!

Its the attitude and mindset.

Its one thing to have a few beers and drive a sailboat at 4mph and its quite another to operate a powerboat at speed in the dark of night sober or drunk.

I just love the dumbass powerboaters with their cigarette boats running up and down clear lake or Galveston Bay at 70mph with the running lights only.

Talk about overdriving your lights.  These guys can't see shit and they are travelling at highway speeds.

I can't count how many obstrucitons and logs I have seen on the lake and bay.

Mastercraft's have shallow hulls and sit very low on the water while Searays have deep bows and sit higher.  The speed is unknown, but they could have easily been doing only 15-20mph.  Since they would not be planing at that speed the bow would be raised quite a bit above the drivers view, it's possible that he simply could not see the boat.

While I don't think they could have provided any aid at 3am on a lake, they should have gone straight to shore and gotten help.

Doubt he ever wanted to practice law.  Law schools have their fair share of rich twatwaffles who go to school for the sole reason that their parents can go to their socialite balls and say "Billy is finishing law school" rather than "Billy is a drunk wastrel who spends his time doing recreational drugs and trying to persuade his girlfriend to get an abortion."  These are usually the idiots who fail the bar exam.

It is unfortunate that this little shit took someone else out while in the process of self-destructing.

My wife's business manager and family were rammed by a sailboat three weeks ago. Their 30ft Beneteau Vs a 49ft Catamaran.  In the dark of course.  The boss even spotlighted the guy prior to collision but no luck.  The guy turned into the manager's evasive turn and t-boned the Beneteau.  Fixated on the navigation lights like most drunks. Both were running on auxilaries.

No one hurt, but 8K in damage to the Beneteau, caved in a lot of the starboard side and tore the mast loose from it's step. It was probably all of a 6mph collision but there is a lot of mass involved.

I've seriously considered not boating at night at ALL because of the risk.  It's a shame because it's the best part of the trip.

Drinking and boating go together. Drinking and DRIVING a boat is a recipe for disaster. I always drink while boating but my wife does the driving after I have been drinking. Common sense. There are dozens of little kids(just like mine) out there enjoying the water, too. God bless the victims and hopefully justice will be served.

A quick summary of some the boating accident fatalities here.  Not included are those already mentioned. (There are too many NON -fatalities to count.)

Jet Ski vs Jet Ski. One dead.  Broad daylight and alcohol NOT a factor. (The only one I've ever seen)

Wakeboard boat vs 60ft anchored cabin cruiser. One dead, body not recovered. (Her bloody face imprint and hair was stuck to the side of the cruiser)

Windsurfer run over by boat in daylight. Seen to surface once in cloud of blood then submerge.  Body not recovered, boater fled but was caught later.

Skier backed over by his own boat. Buddy driving for the first time.

Female guest backed over by party boat while swimming. Twin props.  This same party boat company had ANOTHER the previous weekend. Fell going down the slide standing up and crushed his skull.

Passenger STANDING on bow while boat proceeded down lake. Fell off and caught by the prop.

11-year old boy, run over by his father.  Daddy was trying to put a "scare' into him and bounced him over the bow.

26-year old stripper on Xanax and alcohol. Slipped underwater and not missed for half a day.  Had to wait several hours because all her FRIENDS were too intoxicated to interview. Boyfriend called a day later wanting to know what she had been arrested for.  He was too stoned at the time to realize she was dead.

22 year-old woman, fell between two boats rafted together.  Body not recovered until 6 days later.

Lucky the lakes are closed because of the flooding, huh?

I noticed that there were no sailboating fatalities

We have had some nice ones on Clear Lake  Houston also . . . .

Big cabin cruiser v. inflatable ( with sailers down for hte weekend) coming back from the bars without lights.

25ft fishing boat hit a a skiboat that was anchored

Can't really compare to you laundry list though!

Those open bow boats are dangerous.  I don't let anyone up front if I am operating one of those if I have the boat on a plane.

That sounds about typical.  We had a lake house up in Heber Springs Arkansas when I was younger...that lake was full of the biggest idiots on the weekends.  Boats would chase each other, jet skis would chase boats...skiers were constantly getting hit...don't even try to go up one of the canyons off to the side of the lake...guys doing 50MPH ini about 6 feet of water with rocks and stumps

How is it dangerous to sit in an open bow on plane?

It is dangerous because:
1.  Nothing to hold onto.
2.  Teh motion of hte boat is greatly exagerated as it crosses waves (lever effect)
3.  If the boat slows suddenly, the passenger is thorwn right in front of the boat and then run over.

Do I need to go on?

Oh, forgot about this little Gem:
1.  Bass boat with thos pedestal seats is towing tubers.
2.  Bofriend and girlfriend are sitting on the pestal seat up front.
3.  The dumbass driving the boat firewalls the throttle and makes a hard turn.
4.  Seat back breaks and girl, who was settign on the lap of boyfriend falls overboard and the stern of the boat & propeller run her over.

That happend right off Clear lake on Taylor Lake.

No fatality though.
