Two Die in Crash On Skaneateles Lake Police charge boater with DWI, manslaughter, accuse brother of lying Monday, July 09, 2007By Mike McAndrew and Michele Reaves Staff writers After drinking about a dozen beers, Craig Cordes crashed a boat into and over another boat in Skaneateles Lake early Sunday, fatally injuring its two occupants, and fled without aiding the victims, Sheriff Kevin Walsh said. Cordes stopped to rescue from the lake two pals with whom he had been drinking and who were ejected from his boat during the 2:40 a.m. crash. Õ7KellyÕ But Cordes did not stop to help John E. Kelly, 32, a vacationing police officer from Richmond, Va., or Kelly's girlfriend, Heather D. Wilkins, 26. Instead, Cordes drove about four more miles to his family's camp, leaving Kelly and Wilkins behind in the dark in a damaged boat a short distance from the East Lake Road property where Kelly's parents own a house, the sheriff said. "They didn't give any first aid to the injured people. It's inhumane to say the least," Walsh said. Kelly was dead when Skaneateles firefighters reached the scene. Wilkins was flown by helicopter to University Hospital, where she later died. Cordes, 32, a 1993 Westhill High graduate who is in law school in Tuscon, Ariz., was arraigned late Sunday afternoon in Skaneateles on two counts of vehicular manslaughter and boating while intoxicated. Cordes suffered a small cut on his forehead in the crash. He was released Sunday night from the Justice Center jail after posting a $10,000 bail bond. Witnesses told detectives that Cordes and friends had consumed about a dozen beers before the accident while bar-hopping in Skaneateles. Cordes' arrest came about 11 hours after the crash - and after Cordes' younger brother took the blame for the accident, Walsh said. Shortly after the crash, someone who was on the Cordes boat called the 911 center from the Cordes family camp, Walsh said. When deputies arrived, Brian Cordes, 25, of 4565 Ashfield Terrace, town of Onondaga, told them he had been driving the 19-foot boat when it crashed into Kelly's craft, Walsh said. Brian Cordes was arrested and taken to the sheriff's department headquarters. For hours, deputies were not aware Craig Cordes had even been in the boat, Walsh said. "Craig was nowhere to be found," the sheriff said. After deputies got a court order to draw blood from Brian Cordes to check his alcohol content, a passenger who was in the Cordes boat told deputies that Craig Cordes had actually been driving, Walsh said. Deputies contacted the Cordes family to question Craig Cordes and were told that Craig Cordes would surrender later with his attorney. Hours passed, Walsh said, before Craig Cordes showed up at about 1 p.m. at the sheriff's headquarters. He said Craig Cordes did not give detectives a statement about the crash. Detectives had blood drawn from him to check his blood alcohol level, but the results were not available on Sunday, Walsh said. Deputies dropped the boating while intoxicated charge against Brian Cordes. He was issued a ticket charging him with third-degree hindering prosecution, Walsh said. Everyone involved and their families are deeply saddened over this tragic accident," said Richard Priest, the attorney for Craig Cordes. "We are all heartbroken." This is the second time that Craig Cordes has been accused of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. In 1999, Syracuse police charged him with driving while intoxicated and refusing to submit to a blood alcohol content test. Cordes was convicted that year in Syracuse City Court of driving while his ability was impaired, according to state Department of Motor Vehicle records. A judge fined him $350 for that offense. Kelly joined the Richmond Police Department in 2000, according to Richmond police. "Officer Kelly was a pleasant, positive, and dedicated employee," said Richmond Third Precinct Commander David Martin in a news release. "He was an officer who enjoyed interacting with the community." "This is a tragic set of circumstances," Walsh said. "It makes it harder for us knowing Kelly was a police officer." According to witnesses, Craig Cordes and his brother were part of a group of nine people that spent Saturday evening and early Sunday drinking at Morris Grill, Blue Water Grill and Doug's Fish Fry in Skaneateles, the sheriff said. Three or four of them took a cab home. The Cordes brothers and three unidentified passengers boarded a 19-foot Sea-Ray, Walsh said. About a mile from the village, their boat broadsided Kelly's 21-foot Mastercraft boat, cracking the hull. Everyone in the Cordes's boat knew that Kelly and his passenger were injured, Walsh said. "The people in the boat say they never saw (Kelly's) boat," Walsh said. But Skaneateles firefighters found the boat lights on and the engine off, Walsh said. Kelly's boat was found by firefighters in front of Fire Lane H, near Kelly's family's residence, Walsh said. He may have been pulling into the dock or heading towards it when the crash occurred. Assistant Fire Chief David Card said firefighters searched the lake for about 20 minutes before they found Kelly's boat floating in about 40 feet of water. He said firefighters were originally dispatched to search the west shore of the lake because a resident there reported hearing a crash. After finding Kelly's boat, firefighters were preparing to launch a full-scale search for people in the water but the sheriff's department was then contacted by someone from the Cordes boat, Card said. Walsh said it's not uncommon for people to head back to their camps in boats after the bars close at 2 a.m. He said a "relatively high" speed was needed for the Sea-Ray to go over the Mastercraft, but there is no speed limit on the lake. |

I see the future lawyer has learned his lessons well.
Leaving two people to bleed to death after chopping them up with a propellor then getting his brother to take the fall. Nice family there. |
He will be what's commonly referred to as a "Jailhouse Lawyer" and for good reason. Too many people drink on the water, which is the last place you want to be impaired. |
Why is it always the innnocent victim(s) that die and the drunk motherfuckers live? Why is this cruel twist of fate so common?
Crap like this happens every year out here on the Colorado( mostly dipsh#ts from L.A area). I don't really like seeing all the police boats pestering every one on the river, but these people have to learn some how.
Tragic |
I agree, well except for the "future lawyer" part. There have been a strangely large number of police officers killed in upstate New York in the past year and a half or so, mostly in shootings but one local officer was killed chasing a kid on a motorcycle. Generally Onondaga County isn't as tough as the surrounding rural Republican counties but I suspect they're going to make it ugly for this kid if they can. Most of the "camps" on that lake are very very expensive. |

If this happened at 2:40 AM, both boats should have been displaying running lights - unless the victims were anchored, in which case they should have been displaying an all-around white light.
Not to shift blame or detract from the negligence of the drunken idiots, but it's possible that this could have been averted by proper use of lights. (Then again, it's very possible the victims had visible lighting, and were still run over.) I'm only making this observation, because in my experience, very few powerboaters make proper use of running/anchor lights. |
If this guy gets convicted of felony, he won't be able to get license to practice law in Calif., or any profession that requires a license from the state such as engineers, architects, teachers etc.
I assumed the leo had his boat lights on from that. |

This story kind of hits home. I worked eight of the FOURTEEN lake fatalities in the past 19 months. (Lake Travis and Lake Austin) Every damn one of them caused by someone like this guy. Three of the bodies have not been recovered. One was an 8-year-old girl riding in daddy's Baja that DISINTEGRATED at impact. (60mph +) In this case since one boat overran the other the victims were more than likely caught by the prop/outdrive working at a fairly high RPM. A horrible way to die. |
Hmm ok... I read the article twice and misread that part both times. I know two different guys who have been rammed in similar situations. Both hit-and-runs. Luckily, no fatalities or serious injuries. I hate government restrictions. Rather than more regulations (that will be ignored by stupid yahoos anyway), I think the key to safer boating is just to let ordinary people beat the shit out of the dickheads and then take their boats. |
Double post for some reason.
There is a lot of screaming going on in the boating community in Texas. Lots of folks are pushing mandatory training and licensing for boat operators. Right now some yahoo can buy a 26ft Baja with twin V8's at noon and be driving the thing up the lake by 2pm without the slightest bit of familarization. We kill and maim a lot of folks here. |
I could get behind that. Where are we going to park all the boats? |
Fucking powerboater!
Its the attitude and mindset. Its one thing to have a few beers and drive a sailboat at 4mph and its quite another to operate a powerboat at speed in the dark of night sober or drunk. I just love the dumbass powerboaters with their cigarette boats running up and down clear lake or Galveston Bay at 70mph with the running lights only. Talk about overdriving your lights. These guys can't see shit and they are travelling at highway speeds. I can't count how many obstrucitons and logs I have seen on the lake and bay. |
We are taking a different route and most of our local lakes and some areas of the river are going "dry." Both the water and public beaches are no alcohol. I did notice a difference working the fourth without the alcohol, but it's yet another case of the few ruining it for the rest. |
All we need is more governmental intrusion and this stuff wouldn't happen.
Damn, he's from my hometown and my family is in LE in the area. I'm sure he's known.

Boating accident?
Arfcom SCUBA field trip? ok......time to be serious................. |
Better/worse, more/less incidents? Crowds bigger/smallers? How many people ignore the ban? |
I was thinking the same thing. |
Notice how he had a previous conviction for DUI even with a refusal.
I feel very confident he will be found guilty. What do you think the sentence will be? 20+? |
Mastercraft's have shallow hulls and sit very low on the water while Searays have deep bows and sit higher. The speed is unknown, but they could have easily been doing only 15-20mph. Since they would not be planing at that speed the bow would be raised quite a bit above the drivers view, it's possible that he simply could not see the boat.
While I don't think they could have provided any aid at 3am on a lake, they should have gone straight to shore and gotten help. |
Doubt he ever wanted to practice law. Law schools have their fair share of rich twatwaffles who go to school for the sole reason that their parents can go to their socialite balls and say "Billy is finishing law school" rather than "Billy is a drunk wastrel who spends his time doing recreational drugs and trying to persuade his girlfriend to get an abortion." These are usually the idiots who fail the bar exam. It is unfortunate that this little shit took someone else out while in the process of self-destructing. |

My wife's business manager and family were rammed by a sailboat three weeks ago. Their 30ft Beneteau Vs a 49ft Catamaran. In the dark of course. The boss even spotlighted the guy prior to collision but no luck. The guy turned into the manager's evasive turn and t-boned the Beneteau. Fixated on the navigation lights like most drunks. Both were running on auxilaries. No one hurt, but 8K in damage to the Beneteau, caved in a lot of the starboard side and tore the mast loose from it's step. It was probably all of a 6mph collision but there is a lot of mass involved. I've seriously considered not boating at night at ALL because of the risk. It's a shame because it's the best part of the trip. |
Drinking and boating go together. Drinking and DRIVING a boat is a recipe for disaster. I always drink while boating but my wife does the driving after I have been drinking. Common sense. There are dozens of little kids(just like mine) out there enjoying the water, too. God bless the victims and hopefully justice will be served.
They may only have him on a D felony. I could have sworn they increased both of those. legal gibberish edited out |
Better for LE/fire with less calls for service/drunk asshats/BUIs, worse for the people who drink responsibly and wanted to enjoy a few cold ones on the holiday.
Same crowds, less problems than last year (On the single day I worked the river.) As with all recreation areas, those who want to drink WILL, albeit just a bit more covertly. Can't go around sniffing gatorade bottles all day. I do not agree with the year round prohibitions on alcohol on the water. |

I hate it when you confuse the issue with facts. GRoss tonnage rule again. No one hurt I assume? |

A quick summary of some the boating accident fatalities here. Not included are those already mentioned. (There are too many NON -fatalities to count.)
Jet Ski vs Jet Ski. One dead. Broad daylight and alcohol NOT a factor. (The only one I've ever seen) Wakeboard boat vs 60ft anchored cabin cruiser. One dead, body not recovered. (Her bloody face imprint and hair was stuck to the side of the cruiser) Windsurfer run over by boat in daylight. Seen to surface once in cloud of blood then submerge. Body not recovered, boater fled but was caught later. Skier backed over by his own boat. Buddy driving for the first time. Female guest backed over by party boat while swimming. Twin props. This same party boat company had ANOTHER the previous weekend. Fell going down the slide standing up and crushed his skull. Passenger STANDING on bow while boat proceeded down lake. Fell off and caught by the prop. 11-year old boy, run over by his father. Daddy was trying to put a "scare' into him and bounced him over the bow. 26-year old stripper on Xanax and alcohol. Slipped underwater and not missed for half a day. Had to wait several hours because all her FRIENDS were too intoxicated to interview. Boyfriend called a day later wanting to know what she had been arrested for. He was too stoned at the time to realize she was dead. 22 year-old woman, fell between two boats rafted together. Body not recovered until 6 days later. Lucky the lakes are closed because of the flooding, huh? |
I noticed that there were no sailboating fatalities
We have had some nice ones on Clear Lake Houston also . . . . Big cabin cruiser v. inflatable ( with sailers down for hte weekend) coming back from the bars without lights. 25ft fishing boat hit a a skiboat that was anchored Can't really compare to you laundry list though! Those open bow boats are dangerous. I don't let anyone up front if I am operating one of those if I have the boat on a plane. |
How is it dangerous to sit in an open bow on plane? |
That sounds about typical. We had a lake house up in Heber Springs Arkansas when I was younger...that lake was full of the biggest idiots on the weekends. Boats would chase each other, jet skis would chase boats...skiers were constantly getting hit...don't even try to go up one of the canyons off to the side of the lake...guys doing 50MPH ini about 6 feet of water with rocks and stumps |
How is it dangerous to sit in an open bow on plane? It is dangerous because: 1. Nothing to hold onto. 2. Teh motion of hte boat is greatly exagerated as it crosses waves (lever effect) 3. If the boat slows suddenly, the passenger is thorwn right in front of the boat and then run over. Do I need to go on? Oh, forgot about this little Gem: 1. Bass boat with thos pedestal seats is towing tubers. 2. Bofriend and girlfriend are sitting on the pestal seat up front. 3. The dumbass driving the boat firewalls the throttle and makes a hard turn. 4. Seat back breaks and girl, who was settign on the lap of boyfriend falls overboard and the stern of the boat & propeller run her over. That happend right off Clear lake on Taylor Lake. No fatality though. |
