Well our current heating and cooling system has finally gave up the ship and its time to replace it. The system we have now was installed when the house was built in 1985!  Yes we got our monies worth. LOL..

We have had 2 local dealers out to give us some estimates and I honestly don't know which to go with.  Just really looking for a third party's opinion.

My current setup is a 3ton AC unit and 80,000 BTU furnace. 1200 square feet on the main level and 1200 square feet in the walkout basement.

Both contractors agreed we need to up the size of the AC unit to 3.5ton. I asked about going to 4ton and they both agreed that my duct work probably wasn't big enough for it.
On the Trane estimate is it worth the $570 to up the seer rating from the base model?

Here's the estimates I received.

Thanks

Maybe look into carrier or bryant. I'm looking right now also, and goodman, trane, etc are pretty much meh.

Well, not to your question, but if you were going to consider Trane, go American Standard.  My neighbor who does this stuff says AS is Trane equipment just branded AS.  He says that even the internal part numbers only vary by a prefix, and you won't pay for the Trane name.

If it's any help, I paid almost $6k in Dallas for what appears to be the same Lennox unit. I got 3 estimates, but it looks like I should have gotten more. I have had the unit for less than a year and no issues. My utility bills have dropped by about $75/month so far. I only have 1520 sq feet and wouldn't suggest going less than  3.5 ton, but I do live in Texas.

I don't know too may HVAC techs that would tell you to go with a Carrier over Trane.  Most ot the ones around here recommend Trane, American Standard, or Rheem.

I just put in a 4 ton 18.5 SEER Trane unit and it is very nice.  It has a variable speed motor as well.

OP, it definitely is worth the additional money to go with a higher efficiency unit.  IME, the paypack is pretty quick.

Well these are really the only game in town. A couple of other small places for the most part just work on them and don't do major installs. I thought about calling someone from another town about 10 miles away.

I would not buy from anyone that spelled "will" like "wil1"

Shop around again.  Your second choice is a dummy.  10 miles is not a lot to ask a company to drive for a quote.

Get thee to the DIY forum. I just did this. There's real HVAC guys in there.

How did they agree to go 3.5 ton? Did they do a manual J?

Also XB is builders grade.

It's not necessarily comparable, but i just replaced a 18 year old Trane with a XL18i and it's 3 ton for slightly more Square footage.

Whats a manual J?

Is there anything wrong with builder's grade?

Labor here is really cheap compared to elsewhere.

That extra $700 for "High efficiency" better include a DC variable drive blower. [expensive as hell to replace though]

An 80% is an antique they probably forgot about in the back of the warehouse, that is probably just tossed in for a lowball bid.

Hell, I can BUY a 95% 2 stage for less then that $700 upgrade on the sales write up..

Overall pricing is pretty good though.

What ever you get, make sure it doesn't have a Bristol compressor, I hate them. I can't tell you how many over the years I've replaced, get something with at least a Copeland scroll compressor.

I just got a new unit. Bryant. The guy said that Trane was having customer service issues with their computers.
Sounded like BS but the house is freezing so who am I to argue?

Yes that was some kind of 2 speed blower fan on that upgrade.

Not really sure we need the high efficiency furnace. Are gas bills are really cheap here. But we can spend 2-3 hundred more in the summer for the AC. Last summer my compressor would run all day and night and never get the temp below 76.

http://www.lennox.com/resources/energycalculator.asp

How accurate are these calculators?

Only $140 savings from a 14-16 seer unit.

I can only comment on Trane....they are freaking JUNK. We put a new one in our office building a little less than 4 years ago and the
company that sold it to us has been there every year twice a year to work on it.

Check your energy bills and invest in a Mitsubishi or Fujitsu ductless mini split heat pump. Do your due diligence.

is that two filters in addition to the one installed in the unit, or two filters total, one in the unit, and one spare.
