Is there really anything worthwhile on there?

I downloaded the Tor browser last week and installed it. I've heard that all sorts of cool, weird things can be found on there like super secret intel reports from foreign governments, but I found none of that I tried the crude search engines and some of the lists of sites; I went to the big sales sites and their respective forums.

Most of the sites on there looks like mid 90's internet and some of the crap is actually just old 90's drug and crime forums that are just being rehosted

I only found one mildly interesting thing I guess you wouldn't find on the www...

...are there any cool conspiracy or intel sites that have anything worthwhile on there, or does this pretty much just exist for kids to buy pot and weirdos to look at child porn?

It is slow and has issues, but Tor can be a useful tool at times.

Yes, very slow.

Also, you have to keep trying most of the sites as they seem to only be online on a moment to moment basis

That's the first one I went to, though TSR forums were more interesting.

Still, I don't do drugs, so it's not quite what I was looking for

Well, if the feds uploaded some Roswell alien reports or something, I'd be interested in reading that

Really, idk if I'm doing it wrong or if the really cool sites are like private or "unpublished", but I was pretty disappointed.

I think I had more fun browsing usenet back in the late 90's

As I understand it they can't see what you're doing, but it's widly known that the FEDs have nodes so they know who you're connecting to.  So if you visit a site like "silk road" you may get an unwanted visit if they decide to make an example.  If you buy a little pot I doubt they care, but if you goto the weapons section expect a visit from what is probably an ATF agent involved in a sting.

C'mon. I don't think you're violating any laws by simply going to that site I highly, highly doubt anyone is going to "pay you a visit" simply because you browsed there

Christ, there is tons of illegal shit being sold on those "buy direct from China" sites on the regular web. I've never been fearful for having looked at any of those sites

That said, they had P-mags in stock there

For the drugs or just visiting, probably not.  If you're buying weapons, I'd be willing to bet many of those listings are FEDs.

I think he's probably thinking of the Navy grant money, though it is known that onion routing can be traced if the viewer has a large enough sight window to see both the entry and the exit. Even though the in between is encrypted, they can see this computer asked for a page at an exact time, then it was routed all the way towards this guy. I think that's the vulnerability, but it would only work if you can see the whole picture.

Thanks. Did not know of such a site.

What ever happened to just using Tor when you wanted to visit a public site (legal) but not have a direct link to the visit? It used to be very handy for that purpose... Sort of like the "Make it cold" notion on firemissions.

It's useful for a number of things, but as was mentioned above, the .gov is not stupid and has setup their own nodes to watch the network.

It also shows how pointless gun control is.  If one were so inclined they could make a site like armslist on TOR.

Tor works great if you know how to use it and understand how it works.  The problem is that there are a ton of unsecure or fed-operated nodes which defeats the purpose of using Tor.

Btw, silk road was/is a genius idea if you think about it.  I've read some stories about it and it's amazing how much business some of those sellers get and the methods they use to ship their products.  I wasn't aware they sold guns, though.  I thought it was just drugs.

It was spun off as a separate website since apparently selling drugs is ignorable by big brother while selling guns is not...

I don't claim t understand it all that well, but I read that Tor is extremely popular in China for people who want to bypass the government filters.

Anyway, I started this thread because I was wondering if anyone knew of any cool conspiracy or intel sites in the onion network. Nobody has answered or IMed.

Tor is neat, but I think Freenet is a much more interesting technology. Plus it is a true darknet if you want it to be. Alot easier to stumble across that nasty stuff then on Tor, though...

I dont know of any cool or unusual sites on the tor network, other than as a subject of curiosity I don't use it. It's too slow of web browsing and any other protocol could be bounced through different host(s) that are more secure than the tor network.

What most people in this thread are saying is that tor was intended to be an anonymous network that people could use to avoid having their activities monitored. It is pretty much the exact opposite of that. The nodes themselves are under 3rd party control, some indifferent, others not so much. The nodes in .cn are almost certainly having thier traffic data mined by the chicom government for example. There others that are being mined for "research purposes" by the universities that provide the node.

Like they used to say in the old days, "ass, grass or cash, nobody rides for free".
