IBM Thinkpad 600x

I'm thinking it might make a decent CNC controller...

when you try to boot it up it says:

Error:

00161
00163

eta: google search turned up that this is probably a dead cmos battery.

If it's a CMOS battery, depending on what kind of battery it is and how easily it is to get to to change it, that can be something near-impossible to fix or a very easy repair.

Found this link, seems pretty straightforward.

New problem:

I replaced the cmos battery and that got me a bit further...

But it stops booting at this screen with a simple animation of a disk and arrows pointing to a floppy drive and the F keys arranged at the bottom of the screen with F1 flashing.

I don't have the floppy disk that it's asking for, so I just press F1 and it goes to a blank screen with two error codes at the top right:

I9990305
I9990302

The lenovo website shows that as:

I9990302: Invalid hard disk boot record.
I9990305: No bootable device.

I'm guessing the MBR got corrupted somehow... so how do I fix that?  I tried booting with a super grub disk, but it didn't work.  I'm guessing it isn't compatible with Windows 98 or NT, which the sticker on the laptop proudly proclaims it was designed for.

Try starting up from a Ubuntu or other cd bootable operating system and see if you can see the drive. My guess is the hard drive is toast. You can probably find a working, small, old 2.5" HD on ebay for pretty cheap to replace it.

k,

Attempt 1: Boot from First Hard Disk failed

"Booting from local disk...
isolinux: Disk error 01, AX = 201, drive 80

Boot failed: press a key to retry"

Attempt 2:

Try Ubuntu without any change to your computer

It seems to be loading... I think.  ITs taking for fucking ever, tho.

did they give it to you with a operating system installed ?

Not sure.
I think it has either win 98 or NT installed.  I dunno.  I don't think she would have messed with it, but you never know.  I'll ask.

I wasn't able to boot it before because the cmos battery was dead.

And damn, it's STILL trying to boot ubuntu.  Or maybe not.  At first it had the little ubuntu logo screen with the moving bar... now it just has the blank screen with the blinking cursor.

eta: I don't even know if it can run ubuntu in the system memory.  It's ubuntu 8.04 and the computer only has 64 megs of ram.

eta: now just a blank screen... so I'm counting that as a fail.

the online manual says it'll run a max of 320 mb, so I'll probably go ahead and get a couple of 128mb chips, too.

I can't use tiny linux if I want to use it for CNC work because it probably won't have the correct prerequisite applications to run EMC2

eta: is this suitable memory?

crucial.com is a good source for info on memory, their website will guide you to the correct memory for it.  I think Newegg has a memory finder now too.

There are some MBR repair options out there, but the MBR problem may be just part of a larger issue with hard drive corruption or failure.  Unless there's something you need to recover on the machine I'd just start over again.  Load it up with RAM and try Ubuntu or PCLinuxOS and see what you can get... if you want windoze I'd probably suggest 2000 as it's not going to have enough umph for XP.

There is no hard drive.  The girl who gave it to me must have pulled it.

Well add a hard drive to the RAM then...
