The singer can be divisive among metal fans. I love the riffs and the energy. Early 90's! Definitely clean. Gene Hoglan was their drummer.

Had VINTERSEA  existed thirty years ago they'd be considered one of the great metal bands.

Too dirty for what I'm wanting right now, but Children of Bodom is solid stuff.

Rammstein is an old favorite. They helped a lot early on when learning guitar.

OK one last plug for Dark Angel. Last Song on their last (?) album. Their lyrics aren't shallow.

Born into a peasant monarchy,
A life of inherited luxury.
This newborn Prince with his silver spoon,
His life unfolds and will change soon.
His father, the King, is not ever around,
Never deigning to walk on his own son's ground.
A tragic young life spent in a broken home,
Looking forward to years of life alone.

(They aren't talking about the monarchy, they are talking about kids raised by single moms)

Plenty of clean singing by Phil Anselmo in the more melodic parts of the song, with more grit in the harsher parts of the song.

And thankfully, none of the retarded cookie monster singing or growling that passes for some metal singers these days.

You've posted a few from nuclear blast records, I used to listen to a bunch of bands they signed. Mostly just death metal though.

Looks like I should go look at their current offerings.

Honestly, I'll probably do a sludge thread next. I played with a sludge band a couple moths back, and it reignited an old flame

Perhaps in the morning. I gotta decently expanded playlist going at the moment.

Yea Phil used to be a lot more clean early on and then when Pantera was falling apart he definitely took on that southern yelling style. For the modern stuff I like the cookie monster vocals if you are using it to describe more traditional 1990's and 2000's vocals. I don't really care for the tongue far back and spread wide tone that some of the late 2010 and 2020 singers do. It produces weird tones that sound like demon voice effects in movies where they layer a really deep edit of the audio track played over the original voice like in Night of the Demons or The Exorcist. It doesn't feel sincere to me... if that's even a way to put it to words.

If you only care about it being hard and with clean vocals but don't care about understanding the language then this may be for you.
Its a band from estonia and they make awesome very melodic songs like verijää, vägi ja võim or minu kodu

Moonspell was from Portugal, IIRC; they had several good albums. The singer's voice is insanely deep, but he can go from clean to harsh.

Of Dream and Drama (Midnight Ride)

I love when he rips into the chorus on From Lowering Skies:

I'll second Melissa Bonny.

Her current band is Ad Infinitum, and formerly fronted Rage of Light and Evenmore.

She also seems to love doing side projects and cameos:

duet with Charlotte Wessels (former lead singer of Delain), a heavy cover of Enya's 'May It Be' which a lot of people know from Lord of the Rings.

She features in Feuerschwanz's cover of SEEED's Ding. The video is hilarious

FEUERSCHWANZ ft. Melissa Bonny - Ding (SEEED Cover) | Napalm Records

Amaranthe is also good and has complex vocals (three singers - female smooth, male smooth, male harsh)
