The F2000 was first introduced in 2001 as a versatile yet compact assault rifle. It is a gas-operated, air-cooled, selective fire weapon firing the 5.56 x 45 mm NATO cartridge from a detachable box-type magazine. It boasts the power of a carbine, while its bullpup configuration provides improved ergonomics and compact size, making it shorter than the 14.5-inch barreled M4 carbine. Additionally, much of its frame is constructed from weight-saving polymers. It features forward ejection of spent shells and a P90-style ambidextrous fire selector, and is therefore easily operated by left or right-handed shooters. The weapon is currently being assessed by Belgian special forces as a new combat rifle.
