Defensive Concepts NC

Course

I attended the 2 day Home Defense course by Defensive Concepts NC held in Carthage, NC.

The course was a tactics course that covered working independently to clear your house room by room. The majority of the time was spent using blue guns working on room entering/clearing techniques and identifying good and bad targets. That comes with the discussion and viewpoint of the three instructors, one of which works the street crimes unit of a major police department and is doing this stuff on a regular basis.

We were forunate that only 3 students were able to make it. It allowed us to get a ton of indivudual attention and plenty of time to practice without distractions. What really surprised me was that the course wasn't cancelled, nor did they say "Screw it, we don't need 3 instructors this weekend."

Over the 2 days we shot around 200 rounds of live fire. We did most of that in the shoot house although we did a couple home invasion scenarios out in the open. All shots fired were discussed and expected to be good shots in an effective area of the body. If it wasn't a good shot you needed to make it up on the go. So if you were to put 3 shots on target and one hit an arm while the other 2 were chest shots, you were to keep putting rounds on the target until you had 3 good shots. Luckily none of us were too terrible. This was partially mitigated by a requirement of having previous training under your belt before attending the course.

In addition to the room clearing techniques, we also discussed ways to set up our houses to make these situations easier and safer on us, safe rooms, ways to set up the exterior of our house to help prevent break ins and reasons to need to clear the house, what to say when calling 911, and how to handle dealing with the police once they arrive on the scene.

This is the second course I have taken with these guys, and other than my concealed carry class, they are the only courses I have taken. These guys are cool dudes. You will feel at home real quick and you don't feel a separation between the instructors and you. They are open to any questions, discussion, jokes, and name calling you want to do. It's a fun, laid back, and informal environment. They are very adaptive to the rate of the students and have no issues adjusting the speed for when we need more time on something and when we don't need more time on something.

We've all cleared out our own houses before. After see the professional opinions and tactics on this, I can't believe how little I didn't know before and how stupid it really is to clear a house by yourself. I doubt I'll ever look at another doorway or room the same again, and I'm pretty sure I'm scarred for life on watching any sort of police show.

I highly recommend this course and Defensive Concepts NC.

That is a great training method. It will help prevent always firing a predetermined number of rounds and creating training scars...

Ive heard great things about his classes. Nice to start seeing some AAR's.
