looking at Mitchell, Brookings, Watertown and Aberdeen. Which area is the best for shooting ranges, clubs and competitions.?

Why???

Brookings would probably be your best bet, considering all four of your choices, especially for employment. Two ranges (one indoor, Outdoor (oxymoron, huh?) Adventure Center, one outdoor, Beacon Hill) here with a couple more in Sioux Falls 55 miles away. There's a pretty active 3-gun group here with more competitive shooting in Sioux Falls. So-so hunting (probably better out by Mitchell).

We have family in Pierre and in ND. Wife wants to be closer to family and I recently lost my job so now is the best time for us to make the move.
Have worked weekends for past 8 years and haven't had the opportunity to get into competitive shooting.

If you're looking for employment, Brookings, or even better, Sioux Falls. What field? You'd be about three hours away from Pierre either way.

My concern with Brookings is not finding houses available like up in Watertown. Have a background in customer service/sales and law enforcement but will look into whatever pays the bills.

Well, if it's jobs you want you should look at SF. Coming from Colorado you may enjoy the hills more.

Plenty of housing available in Brookings, although higher priced than Watertown. Wages, however, will most likely be better.

I hope he likes mosquitos too. If I had to work in Watertown I'd live in Brookings.

We all know enough to not want to. Comparing the Black Hills to Watertown is like comparing Estes Park to Greeley.

My friend (also from SF) agrees that Watertown sucks.

I was in the hills earlier this week. Coming back east river is always depressing.......

Oh for fucks sake. OP, you need to realize that in South Dakota there is a West River/East River rivalry. The West River guys are jealous because we have water. The East River guys are mad because they don't have elk. Realize that any conversation you start regarding an ER location will be dogpiled by jealous WR guys.

While Watertown is not Vegas there are some great things about it. Or, at least I would imagine there are. I know the fishing is awesome and the bird hunting is some of the best in the world. Pretty good strip club too, depending on the length of your leash.

BS....it isn't jealousy, it's pity for you.

Watertown is on I-29 about 4 hours from Minneapolis, 2 hours from Sioux Falls, 2 hours to Fargo/Morehead and 3 1/2 from Pierre and the Missouri River. Yes, you are 8 hours away from the Black Hills and winter fun but there are things to do East River as well. There is good fishing both summer and winter, bird hunting is extraordinary, white tail season is as good as you can find, you can snowmobile (if we get any snow), x-country ski, and there are jobs available. I've lived both West and East River and the people of South Dakota are uniformly friendly, if reserved at times (Northern Scandinavian or Germanic stock for the most part East River but that is changing all the time). No income tax although property taxes are a bit lower in the Eastern side.
Either way welcome to SD. I don't live in Watertown but have been there many times. Stop into the Terry Redlin museum if you like art based upon rural scenes.

I appreciate everyones input. It does look like Watertown will be the place. We want to pay cash for any property
we find. Its not going to be permanant.

Well we've been in Watertown for 9 months now.
Found a good job with Terex making decent money
but on second shift. At least weekends are free. Pretty
boring so far and the drivers are clueless. Haven't even
been shooting yet. I am thinking of getting a Jeep Wrangler
and wondering where are the good off roading trails at. Any
help would be appreciated.

Welcome! You should change your state in your profile.

For off-roading trails, you're gonna have to drive 5 1/2 hours out to the Black Hills. MAYBE some in the Pierre or Chamberlain areas.

Ouch, that far away huh? Well I'm still looking for a Wrangler
