This looks a little more complicated, but handles the problem with the 550B only having 4 stations...

I want to be the next to thank the OP.  This is a good solution.  And at the price it can't be beat.  Ordered the parts, and put it together.  Works like a charm.

I bought 4 tubes so I can get around 240 rounds B4 Reloading the tubes.

Awesome work.  How much did it speed up your loading since you already have a case feeder?

I also would like to thank the OP for this thread. I have picked up both the 9mm and 45 ACP versions of the bullet feeder dies. Have also picked up the stop for the powder measure. I went with a company called PIDOUT plastic for my plastic tubes. I bought for the 9mm the .375 X .5" tube. Now this is a bit to wide to sit in the 9mm die so I had to take off about .013" all around the tube. But this still leaves a fairly sturdy tube. The tubes are 6' long and cost about $3.50 (dont have the exact cost in front of me). So, I bought two of these tubes. Now for the 45 ACP I bought a tube that is .625 X .5" X 6' for about the same cost as the other tubes. So 4 tubes and shipping came to about $27.50. Forgot to say that the larger tubes ought to fit right in to the 45 die, but might need just a touch of sanding to fit real good.

And dang you guys are not joking about the amount of belling on the mouth. I could not get the 45 die to drop a bullet (haven't tried the 9mm yet). Dang edge of the mouth is just about to go horz. before the die started to work. I have the Hornady LNL AP. I want to make a vertical support that bolts on where the case feeder sits. Then a horz over to a cable clamp to stabilize the tube. Be just my luck that I would snap it off just above the die if I dont. Thanks for those who posted a picture of your set up. I will try to get mine finished in the next week and post a few pictures to maybe help others.

Great Thread.

A product waiting for a manufacturer indeed!!   Improved expander insert!!
I'm hoping someone comes out with an improved expander insert, properly heat treated etc for the Dillon powder measure that enlarges the the cylindrical diameter by a few thousandths rather than relying so ludicrous belling.

Will place my order as soon as available for a 9mm (and 45ACP)!

In the refrigeration industry, we call that swagging the pipe. Not to be confused with flaring the end. Which is much like belling the mouth of a case. I have a flaring and swagging set. Yes swagging would put less stress on the very lip of the case.

As has been mentioned a couple times already, the Hornady bullet feeder will work if you move your seat die to #4 and crimp at the same time.

That's a lot easier than jerry-rigging the Lee bullet feeder on, IMO.

Anyone else get this working for their Hornady, Dillon etc progressive presses?
Link Posted: 11/28/2011 9:14:43 PM EDT
[#10]
Yeah, I bought the Hornady bullet feeder dies in .40 and 9 mm for my LNLAp.

Each die holds about 10 bullets, and I was surprised at how much it sped up the reloading process even without the plastic tubes.  I don't have to worry about getting the bullet in the case mouth, so I can spent more attention to checking that the powder dropped correctly.

I can refill the feeder die at any time in the cycle, just drop one or two in as needed.

A good investment for $25.

Yep thanks for the info. I have one set up for .40 with pipe from Lowes. I have ordered pipe from the listed source for .40, .38, 45 and 44 if it fits.

Can't believe I didn't look at this sooner.  Ordered the tubes from OP source, free shipping.  Ordered 10

I just need to crank and refill primer tubes.

So basically it works on any press with at least 5 stations?
Link Posted: 11/30/2011 11:58:00 AM EDT
[#14]
It will work on any press with 4 or more stations depending on how your dies are set up. 4 station press can be set up with a size decapping die in 1, powder + expander in 2, bullet feeder in 3 and seat crimp in 4. On my LNL 5 station I run the size decapping die in 1, powder + expander in 2, feeder in 3, seater in 4 and crimp in 5.

The bullet feeder die comes with a Hornady powder through expander (PTX) die to expand the case mouths. A lot of guys ragged on the Hornady PTX and recommend the one from powderfunnels.com. Well I have one of these coming but I have had no problems setting up the Hornady one.

Alright I got my pipe and here is what I found. The link in the first post takes you to a thin wall pipe selection. This is what I ordered and the sizes I came up with are as follow. .40 cal fits in the 1/2" pipe and this pipe fits in the die snug so no tape is needed. I don't have any other caliber bullet feeder dies yet so I am not sure how the following pipe fits in the die but I found that .45 fits in the 9/16" pipe fine and .357 fits in the 7/16" pipe a little lose.

Got my tubes from a different source. And have them fitting just fine. I used some angle iron with pre-drilled holes. and used some flat strap with pre-drilled holes . And then a cable clamp that the tubing fits in. I thought I had all set up, but there seems to be a fine line between flared enough to cause the feeder to drop a bullet and what is to much for the seating die to un-flare and taper crimp. So for now I and debugging and preparing to load 45 ACP. I dont know if I am getting powder bridging or if my electronic scale is acting up.

Maybe I am just having one of those evenings that I should just walk away from the reloading bench and try again tomorrow night. Its just we are having 50 something weather and tomorrow they are predicting 40 degrees. My bench is in the garage and it is not heated per say...

Got my dies and set up on 650.  Still waiting on tubes but I can see my bottleneck is going to be primer filling.

Going to try and make me a home made primer filler based on the Lee auto primer and a vibrator.

I've had this setup for both .45 and 9mm for a couple of months now––working fine.

Today, my .45 setup won't feed a bullet; I've removed/cleaned and reinstalled and it just refuses to feed.

Any suggestions?

I'll have to give it a try, although I'll lose the powder cop die station with this installed.

What size tube is needed for 9mm and what for 45acp.

Thx.

When I have had problems with the die feeding I have added a little move mouth bell and that seams to take care of it.

I built one for .45. Threw it in GD so more people could see how much fun we're having in this forum.

I finally received my tubes for 9mm and 45acp and the bullet feed dies.  So far I've only tried the 45acp and it is kick ass.  Took me a few minutes to get it to drop one bullet at a time instead of two (no instructions and didn't think to read your first post again.)

It is a rather tight fit in station 2.  I see 2 possible possitions:  Have the pistol rotor pointing to your 1 oclock like in your photo and then it rubs the primer tube.  Or like I have it now, the pistol roto pointing towards about 7 oclock and have the spring on the powder drop almost rub the bullet feeder.

Thanks for this excellent tutorial.

Ya mine is tight on the LnL in station 3 the powder measure meter stem is pointing at about 3 in station 2.  The feeder gose on last and is first off as there is no room to turn measure other wise. I am having some feed issues when I get down to the last 20 or so bullets, its almost like there is not enought weight on the stack. The system still works well and speeds up the process a lot.

You can loosen up these screws, and rotate the PM to clear your powder cop etc., without screwing up your PTX adjustments.

Sort of.  I couldn't make it work, but U haven't had time to try to dremel the bushing at all. There are some videos on youtube about it.  Once you modify it for lead it can't be used for jacketed bullets.  Kind of annoying since I shoot over 90% lead.

I just got my 9mm and 45 dies yesterday. This is going to be great once i have it set up. Do you think that we could get those A & B collets from hornady? that way we would only have to change the collets for lead? if not i do see me getting one for lfor my lead too. I just have had the lnl  for 3 weeks and like it very well

Just got my plastic tubes from Linens'N Things and picked up some clips from Lowes last night.  Looking forward to cranking out some 9mm rounds in the next few days.

They could have shipped those tubes in a little smaller box though.

Thanks AlliedArmory and GWhis!  Now you guys need to figure out a cheap and easy case feeder for the LnLAP and I'll be set.

I think they will work fine.  You will need to clean them more often.  RCBS has just released a version of AlliedArmory's idea....only using their feed die.  They advertise that they WILL work with lead bullets.  If they will, I don't see one possible reason why the Hornady feed dies wouldn't.  These are simple simple dies with three parts.

Got this done early this week for my 357's as a trial run!  LOVE it!  Works great.  I made three tubes, and then I used an L bracket and an eyelet hook off the ceiling to support the tube.  Works great!

Anyone done this with .45? I'm getting 2 bullets per cycle when the tube is nearly full.

Any idea how to adjust?

There is a Youtube video that some guy did showing a modification to the dies to make them work with lead bullets. The ultimate question is whether once one does do mod, will it work with both FMJ(plated) and lead bullets? I haven't made it that far in my project yet, as I am still accumulating the parts. FWIW

I need to mess with it more but I tried to use the .45 with leads bullets and they would not pass through the collet.  The youtube mod looks like it removes some metal and they would not be able to be used with fmj any longer.    I shoot mostly lead but would like it to work for both.  I'd even be willing to use a separate collet set for lead, but I'm not sure if they can be had as extras.  I may look at the RCBS unit if I can't tweak it.

Just ordered a couple of the Hornady dies from Midsouth Shooters - they had a really good price on them - $21.19 ea

Got a 357 unit as a gift for one of my mates that is always doing jobs for guys in the gun club, and a 45 unit for myself

I'll be using mine in my Dillon 550 - mate has a Dillon 650

Will post feedback once we have the units

Any tweaking that needs doing to be able to feed lead will get done by my mate - and I'll post our findings and such here. Mate used to work as a toolmaker and engineer and is very good at modifying items to get them to work better.

AFAIK Hornady WILL supply spare parts for most of their product range - so I don't see it being a major deal having two sets of the inner collets - one for lead and one for FMJ

I'll also look at the RCBS unit when I am at the next show: either Sweden in April, or Bisley in June

Does anyone here know if the 9mm version works with bullets that are plated but sized at .356?

Also does the 45acp work with .452 sized bullets?

Thanks!

I have the 9mm and the .40, and plated bullets feed OK for me on the 40.  9mm lead bullets (.356) do not feed.  YMMV.
