Just finished up my Ruger 77/357 Project, thought I would post a pic:

I went with a "standard" length barrel option just to save the time, cost, and hassle of going the
SBR route (plus, SBRing this would only take a few more inches off).

With the Mystic (as shown), it's quiet enough but a little front-heavy; it balances better (and is just
as quiet) with a TiRant 9.  I'll also add that the "stock" open sights clear all the suppressors I've tried
with no trouble.

So far, only shooting .38 spcl's through it:

148 gr Wadcutter - very quiet
158 gr SJSP (LINK) - quiet, though slightly louder than wadcutters

...I've even had a few .38's (mainly lighter loads) go supersonic through it.

Still looking for an off-the-shelf, subsonic .357 load (unfortunately, not in a position to get into reloading
at the moment).  Would be interested in hearing what others are doing with this rifle, or other rifles in the
same caliber.

Thanks,
SD

you should really think about SBRing it. Eforms are only taking a month. I shot mine at 16" for 8 months and didn't like it until it was cut back. 6" is a lot of barrel weight.

I shoot a lot of heavy cast bullets.

So, good to see these 77/357 rifles cut/threaded and suppressed. I've been drooling over them for a month or two.
A couple of questions

1) 9mm cans are fine for .38/.357 right? I was thinking I had to get a .45 can.

2) It looks like you cut the barrel to 12", who did  the work? approximate cost?

3) Talk about the optic a bit, like it, yes or no? manufacturer?

Thank you

They all should be good for .38spl but not all will be rated for .357. Make sure you get one that takes apart if you shoot a lot of cast bullets.

My mystic loves the handi rifle, but she might love a 77/357 SBR even more.

I wish they made a wood stocked model.

Stainless Steel/ titanum baffles should be good to go with 357 magnum, but check with the manufacture first.

I had a local smith cut it down. If I can remember, right around $150

Leupold VX1 turkey plex. I've liked it a lot. Light, bomb proof. I just leave it on 4x all the time. the bottom of the circle works for 100yds, between for 75, and crosshairs for 0-50.

Boyds makes wood stocks for the 77/357.

The 77/357 stock is the same as the 77/44 except the 77/44 has a front mounting screw and the 77/357 does not.

I tried the penn's. I got strange flyers and the feeding wasn't very good.

those bullets I posted above are 300 grainers but I couldn't get enough velocity to be happy. I could only get them up to 860fps.
I've settled on the 246 grainers.

Thanks, I have a mystic in NFA jail and was planning to shoot cast in it.  I was hoping your weren't going to say 100 or 200.  1000 between cleanings sounds manageable.

$650 local here.  Gunbroker can save you $100 or so on a used one.  I've been watching a few and intend to pick one up for an SBR project.  This thread is to blame!

I like this a lot
Compact but quality scope ====check
shorter barrel=batter balance and length + don't really want extra velocity for this use===check
creative reloading and ease of reloading straight wall case==== check
Well thought out project , nice execution .

Note to OP , don't know your situation but to have a 357 rifle with a can and not reload is sort of crazy
Get a used single stage press (most any gun store has a couple laying around ) and you can be in business for less than the cost of a stamp
Even if you are living in a tiny space I have seen rigs where the press is mounted to a 2X8 and clamped to the kitchen table or coffee table for use then tossed in the back of the closet when not in use .
Hardly anything easier than loading 38/357

LoL... I appreciate the input, but I suppose it depends on your perspective.

Sure, I have the $$$'s and space to do it; but not the spare time/interest to pick
up this aspect of the hobby at this point in time.  It's better for me right now to
spend the time I would spend researching loads, trimming brass, running the
press, testing the loads, etc. (no doubt I'm leaving steps out), actually shooting.

But-- there's value to reloading, no doubt.  Particularly when trying to optimize the performance
of a platform like this (i.e., subsonic .357 Mag loads).  It's just something that's going
to have to be on my "to do" list for the present.

Question:

When looking for upgrade parts for the 77/357, I can't find model specific parts. For example, 30mm scope rings are only listed for the 77/44. And the Timney sear and spring is only listed for the 77/44 as well.

Are all the 77/357 and 77/44 parts interchangeable?

FWIW a 8-12"  McGowen barrel cut, threaded and installed is $475. Sounds crazy, but I think I'm going to pull the trigger. I shoot 38 wadcutters ther most out of any round.

Now I'm on the hunt for another Mystic to dedicate to this rifle.

I built a 77/357 and just  got in my Mystic on Wed. My rifle has an 11.25" barrel. We took it hunting Thursday night and first round out of the the new can and my 14 year old scored a double on hogs! He was using the Federal 180 grain cast core bullets-- lbt design. He shot first pig about an inch behind the ear and the other one was hit in the heart...didnt recover the slug either !! One of the best little plinking and woods bumming guns I own.

Any other options for a bolt action 38/357 to suppress?

If I'm going to rebarrel it and build up a new stock, I pretty much just need an action. And I can't find one.

Not that I'm aware of. Lever guns of course, plenty of those...Handi Rifles/Thompson Centers....that's about it. You see a few Martini Cadet rifles in .357 from time to time as well, I think they did a run of Browning 1885 single shots in them too at one time.....Pretty limited options in .357 rifles. Which, I don't really understand, it's a great cartridge in a rifle if you are looking at a modest range hunting rifle- for women or kids or just a fun to shoot range toy. The virtues are many.

With rimmed cartridges, the choices in bolt guns are kinda tough. You might use an Enfield....but then you have an Enfield...it's a clunky action and way too long. I think it's almost criminal what Ruger charges for the 77/357 but the options are pretty limited. I am hopeful they might someday make an American Rifle in .357, that would drop the price several hundred dollars, bring it down into the $400 range probably. It's a real possibility....

I have two very unique .357 rifles. I have a Marlin 62, magazine fed lever action that was originally made in .256 Winchester (.357 is the parent case). A previous owner got tired of trying to find the .256 ammo I'm betting and pulled the original barrel and replaced it with a 16"stainless barrel in .357 magnum. It's a pretty neat rifle, great cast bullet gun. Mine wears a 4x Leupold M8 on it. I also have an IMI Timberwolf in .357 magnum. They were only imported for a few years in the early 90's- tube fed pump action. It's a handy little gun and one that always draws a crowd at the range. Have one in .44 magnum as well. I don't know why they stopped selling them, lots of folks really liked them but I guess they just didn't sell.

Thanks.

I'm hoping Ruger does a .357mag No. 1 this year.

I have a Handi rifle, and I do like the break action single shots. But I'd like a bolt or a rolling block for repeatability when I'm target shooting.

I've contemplated a Bullbery custom Encore several times, but I want something that is easy to reload at that price.

Which, I don't really understand, it's a great cartridge in a rifle if you are looking at a modest range hunting rifle- for women or kids or just a fun to shoot range toy. The virtues are many.

I have one very unique .357 rifle.

Any other options for a bolt action 38/357 to suppress?

If I'm going to rebarrel it and build up a new stock, I pretty much just need an action. And I can't find one.

Yes it is. I figure with the setup I have, Ruger 77 .357, Weigand rail and Leupold 1-4x, barrel cut to 11.5, Liberty Mystic......I have well over $2k in this thing as it sits.....It doesn't SEEM like it should be that much but....

Ruger with tax $800
Weigand rail-$60
Leupold-$150 (gunshow find)
Barrel Cut-$125 and $200 Tax stamp
Liberty Mystic $700 with Tax and $200 Tax stamp
Engraving of Receiver $65

Favorite load in the 357 is using Sierra's 170 grain FMJ flat base silhouette bullet.

You will have to tinker with it if you want to load subsonic in a rifle, but having loaded it in 357 cases with shotgun powder on a custom Thompson Contender with a AWC custom suppressor - it was awesome on steel targets out to 50 yards.

A buddy of mine built up a custom load using the same bullet loaded in a 357 SIG case with the bullet sized down to .355, but I cant really recommend doing that.  Some people can get away with doing that since their employer will cover all expenses for any mishaps, most of us taxpayers cant.

Gotta get a Ruger rifle now.

Ruger did a special run of about 1800  chambered in 357 Mag in the early 80's for the California Highway Patrol Association emblazoned with the CHP crest. A few of them (around 400) were not marked and offered for sale by J&G Rifle Ranch through the Shotgun News.

I'm the odd guy out, as i only have a lever 38.357 threaded. The 77/357 is nice unfortunately not in a financial position to bust the bank on it.

Regarding reloads.
38 spl
Running a MG 125 JHP with 4.3grs TG. The consistent remark when someone shoots it is That's fukn Impressive.

158gr Hornady XTP JHP 4.8 grs Unique with a tight crimp also impressive.

Haven't run any 357 loads yet. I like the max end for the 38spl heavier bullets, giving very quiet report and still hit hard. Both the 125 & 158 are giving me good groups @ 50yd sight in (iron sight) POI with suppressor (YHM 45cal Cobra) is 1" to the right of unsuppressed.
Sad thing i picked this can to run on the pistols and 9mm carbine. I threaded the rossi 92, just because.  It gets almost all the suppressor time .

That might change once i do one of those $100 Form 1 30 cal cans.

Just as a low cost alternative i have been VERY happy with my 357 Handi rifle shooting 38 special through a Octane 9. With a 16" barrel it is very short since it does not have the action to add length. What you trade is having only a single shot platform. But for simple plinking i dont think it can be beat as a bang for your buck alternitive. Also I reamed mine to 357 Max which gives me  a lot of flexibility for hunting.  I shot my 22/45 Tactical  solution upper with a Specter II today and then fired a 148gr LSWC over 4.0gr Unique through the above rifle. The Handi was quieter than the suppressed 22LR pistol. Also the Handi rifles are basically a take down rifle if you take the forearm screw out. It fits in my range bag once disassembled.

All that being said i still drool over the SBR bolt action. I just cant decide what way to go. 357 or 44 mag bolt gun, or lever gun or even 45/70 sub sonic in a lever gun. But i do want some type of "repeater".

Awesome.

I just sold my 357 Handi Rifel to fund this build. I couldn't afford to have two "special purpose" guns, and if I was going to invest the time and money into a tax stamp, I wanted to do it with a repeater.

I'm really looking forward to owning and shooting this rig. The Handi Rifle was so much fun.

I have a 38 special lever gun.........love it suppressed.  That being said, Id like to see a 77/357 cut short.....cut down the forearm shorter, short.

Wish there was more stock options. Something like an AGP style folding stock on a SBR would be awesome.
