First off let me start by saying this is my first post. I've always been interested in guns; more so in the last year and a half.  Ive found this site to be a wealth of knowledge and frequently came to it in search of answers. I've always been able to find my answers so I never thought about making an account until now.  I figure now as my questions become more complex I would benefit from starting an account. So intro out of the way I need some guidance...

I found a Norinco Sporter SKS at a local Outdoor shop that recently opened its doors in my town.  Though it wasn't in the greatest condition I snagged it for a ridiculouly low price that also included  30 & 10 round Chinese mags.  So there are some rust spots I want to take care of in the rifle and I don't know how to go about fixing them.  Since these rifles are somewhat valuable and uncommon in the SKS world I'm afraid to blast it and refinish it.  Though I do wish to keep it and shoot it I would also like it to keeps its value.  Would doing this just completly destroy its value?  How do products like Navel Jelly or EvapoRust work?  I'm looking for different options than CLP and steel wool.  Also someone replaced the top cover with a Red Star top cover in order to mount a scope.  I'm worried about 922r with this rifle so would buying a surplus top cover get me back to being ok since most  SKS's are mismatched anyway?  Thanks guys I look forward to being part of the community!

Here are a couple of pics of some bad spots on the gun...

Navel jelly will take the bluing off, CLP or any other oil and a brass or copper bore brush will take the rust off while leaving the surrounding blue intact.

As far as value, it is a commercial model SKS, not a piece of history like a military surp one. As long as you hang onto the original parts, and not do anything permanent it will not hurt its value.

Value may be hurt already.. its rusted, but if its not horribly pitted, a good clean up would help.. Frog lube would take the rust off and stop it from coming back.

How much? Looks like it isn't to bad. Steel wool or fine brush like was mentioned. You can touch up with some chemical blueing. Looks like a good buy.
