I have had a Yugo SKS for several years, a really nice Cherry's 'unissued' model my dad got at a gun show for $150, nice gun but I always wanted a Russian. I put a Swedish Mauser up for sale/trade and had a guy locally offer me a Russian SKS and this is what I got:

1954 Izhevsk, all matching including stock, no refurb marks, metal not painted, plus sling, cleaning kit and over 300 rounds of Wolf and Yugo M67. The only slight negative is the previous owner said the shellac was flaking so he removed the rest. I would say this was a perfect specimen for my one and only Russian.

Perfect, it is indeed nice.

That's worth 3x as much as your swede. I've seen original matching Izhevsks like yours go north of $1K on Gunbroker. Congrats on a fine rifle, take care of that one!

I was thinking it would probably be worth more like $600, either way a lot more than I had into the Swede!

ETA I would like to re-shellac the rifle, the previous owner said he removed the shellac and waxed it. Would mineral spirits and elbow grease be enough to remove the wax before adding shellac?

This is just my thoughts, take it for what it's worth.

As the rifle sits with the original finish stripped it's not worth $600. IMHO it would be more like $450-$500. Once you strip the original finish you cannot get it back and this has a significant impact on the price and collectability.

I think trade wise you did really good, I would have made that trade hands down.

Regarding getting the wax off mineral spirits should work just fine. At this point you don't have anything to lose since he stripped the shellac off and some of the color with it. I would strip the wax off and apply some fresh coats of shellac to get it back to as original as possible. You can tell how much darker the original finish is on the low points of the markings where he didn't get all the shellac out.

This is what I was thinking as well, since the original finish is gone, stripping the wax and putting fresh shellac on won't make it worth any less, at least it will look better

I would agree, if you are comfortable with using shellac then go ahead and make it happen. It will only make it look better and as close to original as it will ever be.

I have some orange shellac flakes left from working on some K31s, I'm thinking a little red/brown dye mixed in will do the trick

Got it out shooting today, at ~30 yards rapid offhand with Wolf, can't wait to shoot it from a bench with Finnish ammo
