I've spent some quality time on a Google Search and come up rather empty.

Does anyone know where I can get 7.62x39mm 40 Round Replacement Springs?

30 round springs.

Could just be the Russians not giving a fuck with storage after the collapse of the USSR and mixing shit up, but the Russian 40 round springs I've looked at have been the same as 30 round springs. I've looked at a hundred or so though, so I would imagine they just use the same spring.

If magpul can pull off using the same springs in 20rd and 30rd mags, I don't see why it wouldn't work for AK mags.

+1...same springs in my experience within 1 coil.

I've used the Wolff XP AK mags springs in 40s with good success to rebuild weak mags for friends. They work well. See here: http://www.gunsprings.com/index.cfm?page=items&cID=2&mID=77
