I've browsed some other forums, and it seems like there's sort of a hatred of ANYTHING Tapco. I agree that some of their stuff LOOKS stupid, but I have always found things they made to be functional.
I have about 6-7 of their AK mags, and between myself and people I know we've NEVER had an issue with them. Going forward, I will probably just buy the Magpuls since they are the same price, but seriously, is there a problem with the Tapco AK mags I'm unaware of? Granted they aren't steel com-bloc, but for range mags why not? |
|
I don't hate them, they are totally fine for range mags, especially at the price you can find them for, next time I find a few for 5 bucks a piece i'll probably buy some. And there are other good Tapco products, most guys have good things to say about the G2 triggers, I run them on mine and they're great. Also a big fan of the Tapco slot brake, absolute best bang for the money at 15 bucks or less, controls muzzle rise better than a whole lotta brakes that cost 5 times as much.

I've only shot a couple hundred rounds through mine, but I haven't had an issue. About $9 around here.

Their AK triggers are good, mags are ok as long as I don't have to have one, everything else, meh.

I don't like the waffle pattern ones. I don't like how fat they are at the base. I like the slab side ones.

I have one slickside Tapco 30 rd AK mag and it has worked just fine the few times that I have used it.
I tried an experiment for a few(about 4) years with a few mags. I keep them loaded to 30 rounds in my range bags and used them every time I went with the AK's. 1 Ribbed Tapco 30, 1 clear Bulgarian(no steel lugs or feedlips) and 1 Polish polymer(with steel lugs and steel feedlips) After about 2-3 years the Polish mag spewed rounds out the bottom when 1 of the lugs that the floorplate hold on to broke off. After About 3-4 years the front plastic lug of the clear Bulgy mag disapeared after trying to load the mag. Still have the ribbed Tapco mag and it still functions perfectly. I've now added the slickside Tapco 30rd AK mag to the rotation, had it for about 6 months. |

Tapco had nothing to do at all with the design of the G-2 trigger. It was designed, & first made by Gerry Gordon, of Gordon Technologies who made some of the nicest Milled AK's with the Arsenal of Bulgaria receivers, & Hungarian AK kits. He then sold the machinery to make the FCG parts to Tapco, who continues to make them. While I'm not a big fan of replacing excellent imported parts with substandard US parts for 922 compliance [especially removing Chinese FCG parts] I do have a G-2 FCG in my US made Galil clone, & it has proven to be excellent. I do have a set of real Israeli FCG parts, but I haven't needed to install them yet. GARY View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

Did not know that, but I meant as far as products with the Tapco name, not necessarily who designed it. Regardless, for the money it's a very decent trigger and most people have nothing but good to say about them. I know I like them (I've owned three rifles that had the G2). Kudos to Gerry Gordon. |

They make good stuff. |

First mags I bought were Tapco 20 round waffles, at the time I didn't know the Hungarian tankers existed. No complaints, they worked every time, but my surplus Romainian steel 30s are a good tight fit so the Tapcos needed a LOT of filing to fit. If you have mag wobble and don't like it, a custom fit Tapco may be your answer. I agree though, when you can get surplus 30s for what new Tapcos cost, the surplus is the better deal.
|
|
People shit on them because 1) they have the Tapco name, 2) they're non-reinforced polymer, and 3) they've never owned one.
I'll buy Tapcos whenever they pop up for $7. The chunkier, spineless Tapcos feel better in my hand than surplus, so I tend to use grab them first when going to the range. I have an adequate supply of surplus mags should the time come for non-recreational shooting, so I don't stay up at night worrying if the Tapcos will fail. |
|
I've got a few that have come with rifles I've bought. Probably hold up fine but when you can buy a metal mil-surplus mag for $10 no reason to buy a Tapco.

Because I can have steel magazines that belong in the gun and have a 50+ year proven track record . The triggers are decent . The assault on the eyes and common decency what Tapco has done with sticking an M-4 stock and a rail on everything have hurt their reputation .
|
|
I have probably 20 or so that I picked up for $5 apiece that I use for range mags. Not bad.
I have probably 50-60 of the commie steel ones that I like better, but they're also twice as expensive. |

no issues here
the slabsides work just as well as the waffle ones I will also buy more when they come around for $5/pop |

I like to test things so I got one Tapco slab side and a few of those newly manufactured Korean mags.
I've abused the Tapco from day one and it has never failed me. I did however have a malfunction with one of the Korean mags the first time out. While I much prefer bakelites and combloc steel mags I would trust my life to a Tapco if need be. Those Korean mags are garbage. |

No issues with the Tapco mags here. They just don't look as cool as the surplus steel mags.

I can tell you why the Tapco hate. I recently took my first class with my AK's. I had one arsenal and one saiga. I had someone from the class use one of my Ak's and I used the other. We were doing a lot of shooting over the 2 days. About 800 rounds. I had some steel mags and a few tapco mags. We were doing a lot of emergency reloads, moving and shooting. I will tell you guys this much. I would never use these mags to save your life. If your just doing occasional plinking then they should work fine for you. But my experience and the other guy who use them had the same experience with them. Hanging up when doing quick reloading and a lot of malfunctions on failing to feed. Speed is not for these mags. The steel ones never had an issue with them at all. Plus you can throw the magpul gen 1 AK mags in with the tapco's. Another guy was having issues both days with his magpul mags.
I can tell all u guys this take an actual class doing some serious shooting and then you will see what I'm talking about. If you just do plinking every once in a while and don't care then those tapco mags will be fine. But in an actual class those mags failed often. No thanks |
|
I have Tapco mags and never had any problems with them. That is all I have used for the past 3 or 4 yrs for 2 and 3 gun matches and such. Lots of use with no problems.

My Tapco mags have never failed me while doing mag dumps, bump firing or the 2 day Puzikas class I attended. |

I saw some photos last year from Ukraine where much to my surprise, there was a guy with a Tapco mag in his UF AK. Wish I could find it again.

I went ahead to order 4 Tapco smooth side AK-47 magazine in three different colors (black, orange & DE) for $7.88 each. Once I have a chance to evaluate my new Tapco magazines. I will update my post with my final comments.

Took my 4 new Tapco AK magazines to the range yesterday. All 4 mags worked flawlessly. All magazines fit my Polish & Rommy AK magazine wells correctly. I will order two more soon.

When it comes to all plastic AK mags, I prefer the Radom mags over these but they're still nice. Also note that there is an indent on the back rib for a fully loaded indicator. Drill out on the inner curved spot of this indent with a 1/8" bit and you have your indicator. Not sure why Tapco doesn't drill it out, but it's in the correct spot in their mold. |

I have had to file every one of my AK mags to make them fit in the rifle. They work fine after that but not fitting in any of 6 AK's is B.S.
They should work as is. I stopped after 6 mags. I bought them as range mags. Won't be buying any more. |

Have a few Tapco 30 rounders, a 20 and a 5…prefer the slab side versions and wish they made it for the AK74. Also have several Bulgarian "bullet" poly mags, these also lack the metal lips and lugs…they work just fine for the intended limited use.

I've got one loaded up and stored away doing the spring test on it right now myself. I haven't had any issues with mine so far.

I wish they would make slab sided 74 magazines. I just got in on the ddi deal and I'm only going to use tapco magazines. Ten mags at 30$ to 40$ a pop just doesn't jive with me for a cheap range plinker.

I have only had 1 problem with a Tapco..it was fucking freezing outside.....around 0 deg and I had 1 mag that started to hang the follower.....I took it into the shop..sanded the sides of that follower and put it back into service with no more probs. If I had to go to combat with Tapco's, I honestly wouldn't feel awful about it. Steelies FTW of course, but Tapco's are OK.

I got 12 of the ribbed ones for $50 and have a couple slab sides.
I like the slab sides as they look like the izzy polymer mags and don't run $100 per mag. Reliability has been equal to circle 10 and steel mags for me across several guns. |
