So a few of my friends and I were dicussing how we wished Magpul would come out with some 20rd magazines. So we reasearched it and couldnt come up with anything. I decided I was to do a little project and make myself one. I had heard of a guy who converts steel magazines, why couldnt I convert this poly mag. I then again, searched the internet to see if anyone else had done this. Couldn't find anything. So I figured it out playing around, wasted a couple of mags, but finally figured it out. Takes about 15 minutes. So I dont know if im the first to do this or not, but I wanted to share this with everyone and hopefully someone will apprechiate it and maybe magpul will eventually come out with them. 20rd mags have their benefits. I love them because they are shorter which allows for closer to the ground when shooting prone. I also love them because they work better with underbarrel attachments. And of course, it being compact.

So heres how to make your own 20rd AK pmag.

Youll need: Magpul AK 30rd mag, Dremel, Cutting wheel attachment, and hacksaw. Sandpaper if youre wild.

Basic mag.

I used a band saw, but im sure a hacksaw is easier to come by and would do the same thing.
Youll need to cut the mag in half right below the second horizontal rib.

Smooth bottom of the mag out and make sure its even.

\On the bottom rib, youll need to startwith the dremel making a lip for your base plate to slide into. Make sure you dont dremel too deep. Take your time and wrap all the way around the back of the magazine.

On the corners of the back of the mag, however deep you go in your lips, youll need to make the corners flush with the depth of the lip.

Kepp working with it little by little and putting on the baseplate to make sure it fits and where you need to do a little more work.

The spring will cramp up inside the the newly shortned mag, and without cutting the spring, it will only let you load 18rds in. So we will have to cut the spring. I cut 7 curves up from the front of the mag, however my mag is tightly fit when I load 20, I would go 8 curves up from the bottom.

There are the grooves for the follower inside the mag. These will have to be smoothed out on the inside, not very much, about 1/4 inch.

Put everything back together again like you would normally and youre done.

Ive so far fired 300rds through the mag and it has functioned 100%. I hope this is of some use for somebody, as you can see i have done a couple of other modifications to this mag, this mag will also hold the bolt open on the last round with the modification I have done. I will follow up another post on how-to do that as well. Ive now done this same process on all 6 of my PMAGs, really because, I just hate 30rd mags.

Happy shooting

That's really cool.  I am wondering how solid that base plate feels?  Must not be an issue since you've already fired it quite a bit.  Is it durable?

Baseplate is solid. My reloading between mags, I do the flip out method with another mag. So when I mag change, they hit the ground. Ive not had any issues with it popping off or slipping track.

I also like 20rd Mags and would like to see Magpul come out with one. Until then, I followed your excellent tutorial and made my own.

Fairly easy, took about a half hour, works great, then I decided I also wanted one in Magpul stealth Grey.

Awesome Bro. The stealth grey looks really nice. The grey and black color scheme would look amazing on a M92. Makes me happy to see other people enjoying the pleasures of the 20. lol
