My father in law, "doc" Schneider passed away recently. We found this guy cleaning house. Rounds are marked 71 & 86 with a brown lacquer coating. Nice and rusty.

I wonder how well youd be able to clean it up. Be nice to preserve it in some way.

Cool.

Now you can end the endless discussion about loaded mags ruining the spring tension from being loaded for a long time.

This would be a perfect example of leaving loaded mags not ruining the spring.

Factory 71 1986.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

He told us it was with his gear in the store room and he has mentioned this magazine before. He didn't own any guns after the war and he did see combat. I have no doubt the magazine is authentic. The ammo? There is only a few rounds in the mag, so anyone's guess.

If these are what your headstamps look like bass is correct. Most likely factory 71.

The rounds are consistent with what you posted: 71 and 86, but I still believe the magazine is authentic and was probably loaded by Doc Schneider when he acquired some 7.62x39 from somewhere. He wasn't a gun guy, so where he got the ammo is anyones guess.

The magazine appears to be consistent with chinese manufactured magazines based on the flat back and rib pattern. There is one vent hole. The weilds are very seamless.

Here are some additional pictures if anyone can help with further identification:

The patina is glorious!

The interior of the magazine is full of dust and dirt, the follower was barely able to be removed.

Hell i would snap that bad boy into my AK and run it as it is.

A lot of guys brought back magazines, but ammo received a lot more scrutiny so I don't doubt the magazines authenticity. I would spray the mag down with clp and wipe it down with just a rag to remove dirt and excess rust and stop further rust.

My dad gave me a 1911 magazine from his issued pistol in Vietnam.  Not a happy story of where the first 3 rounds went. Last 4 shot just fine, felt a little hotter than the WWB I shot that day.  Ancient USGI magazine woohoo!

I got rid of all my 1911 junk years ago but hung onto that mag since I feel a bit of a connection to my dad with it.  That AK mag is pretty cool in that sense.

Are my eyes bad, or do those say "68" not "86"?

Those say 89. That's what the box they came in says as well.

Eta I just posted mine to show him the orientation of the numbers on norinco ammo.

That is really cool. I would oil it down and set it aside. Thank you for sharing.
