Ok say you take an anderson lower, grind off the fence completely, file it flat or whatever, refinish. Obviously you can't use thespring detent style front pin anymore, but can you take an old civilian-style screw in front pin and use that? Or will it be too big diameter or is there something missing?

Colt briefly made .250 diameter double-screw pins for some of their rifles in the mid 1990s or early 2000s, so those would work on a fenceless anderson.

Didn't very early M16s use a pin with a built in ball detent?

Thanks. I think the 601 had a ball detent front pin, but I think most the civilian SP1s had a screw-in but they are typically .315 I guess which is bigger than the Anderson front pin hole

They're available to back order at Brownells: http://www.brownells.com/rifle-parts/receiver-parts/receiver-hardware/receiver-pins/receiver-pivot-pin-250-screw-type-prod4895.aspx

A ball detent like mentioned above will work if you have the upper's front lug rebated, or find an early upper with the rebate.

I'm pretty sure the recess in the pic you posted is for a pin with a detent, its where the detent would catch. I could be wrong, but I recall reading about this recently. Either way, if needed, it could be machined easily.

it (the Colt's ) doesn't have a screwdriver slot on one side and is flattened (not full round) to fit the fence.

now my solution was to have a .250" screw set made.

contact arfcom (mostly retro) member heatnbeat for more info.

Check with Mike or Harlan at Nodak Spud.  IIRC they make a slab side lower replica

You could use one of the ball detent pins that KNS Precision makes. This .250 diameter take-down pin has a spring loaded push button. When pushed, the stainless steel keeper pins retract for easy pin removal. The pin is designed to eliminate wear in and around the hole caused by pins with spring loaded balls.

I use one of these on my HBAR when I swap my 601 upper and HBAR upper back and forth.  They also carry the .250 diameter screw retained type that Colt used.
