I am building a 16" mid length rifle, with a Spikes govt profile barrel.  Aero Precision upper/lower, and a 12" Aero Precision MLok handguard.  Ill likely get a JP Adjustable gas block.  I am looking for buttstock suggestions, my main concern is balance.  Does anyone have any experience with this type of setup that can weigh in their $.02?  I'm looking for something under $100.

Thanks

is it planned for precision? or a battle rifle? I can't weigh in on the precision aspect, but if your looking for a good battle rifle stock, you really can't go wrong with simplicity. The magpul MOE, CTR, or STR stock is what I would suggest. They're $40, $60, and $80 respectively.

Yes, a battle rifle setup for sure.  I am beginning to see Magpul stuff EVERYWHERE, and I really am having trouble deciding on the right stock.  I started looking at VLTOR (How are you supposed to pronounce that?!) IMOD with the clubfoot.  I am kind of digging that for the moment.  I just don't want to throw money at something on a whim.  I will probably end up with a white light on the end of the handguard at some point, so I'm guessing a heavier stock will help with the balance issues.

Ive never owned the IMOD club foot, but I've handled one quite a bit. That being said, I personally HATE the way the lever for retracting and collapsing the stock is designed. It feels flimsy to me. Its also 9.9 oz. The magpul ACS stock is pretty similar to the IMOD, but uses a better lever for collapsing IMHO. it also has small compartments for 123 or AAA/AA batteries, and another storage compartment that is small and probably wouldn't be utilized, but still nice to have. The ACS is also 14 oz which would help in your balance agenda. And its 10 bucks cheaper than the IMOD. Here https://www.magpul.com/products/acs-carbine-stock-mil-spec

I don't like the usgi pattern adjustable stocks, the position release lever is too exposed.  I have a MOE on one and a CTR on another.  I like the CTR between the two.

I used to make fun of magpul cult followers.  After having purchased a few of their products recently I can see that some of it was justified.

There alot to like about the Vltor Imod clubfoot.  Having had one now for about a year, I'd say it is my most comfortable, natural feeling cheekweld stock.

Having the Magpul ACS stock too, they're both great stocks to have on your AR.  You should look at the B5 enhanced Sopmod Here and it's brother Bravo Sopmod.

Again great stock.  Got the Enhanced Sopmod.  Having all 3, they all lock up tight on my tubes and don't rattle.  One other stock you can consider is the

LWRC Ultra compact stock.  Here  I am considering putting this on my next build to shorten up the overall length.  Decisions, decisions.....

+1 for the Magpul CTR.  I've tried a lot of different stocks and the CTR works really well and isn't too expensive.   BTW, I have an UBR on my bench rifle... it's a really nice stock but .it's too heavy for a carbine.

I've used the CTR forever, then found the STR to be more favorable. I don't use the tubes, but the extra width is nice.

Look at the offerings from B5 systems.  I just put a B5 Bravo on my 14.5" carbine, and really like it:

They also have the SOPMOD, which has storage compartments:

I use the MOE-SL on my 14.5" & 16" carbines and the ACS-L on my 18" SPR.

I think the biggest problem you'll have is offsetting the weight of the muzzle end of the government profile barrel as they are very front-heavy.

Last winter I purchased a stripped lower and just started putting parts in a box for the rest of the year. I'm down to needing just a stock and buffer tube. Pretty much know which stock I'm going to get but I'm wondering Is there a big difference in buffer tubes out there? Which ones to maybe avoid or are buffer tubes, buffer tubes if they are mil spec? Thanks

I have the Moe, CTR and STR. Out of the three, I prefer the CTR.

I've been loving the way the USGI M4 stocks look with free float rails lately....

I just installed a Magpul SL on my gun. It has a heavy profile 7.62x39 barrel. The balance is not perfect (I blame the barrel) but I am really liking the stock and they retail under $60. The fit is TIGHT, and no secondary lock up is needed. It also has a QD socket.

I have use a bunch of different buffer tubes, mostly budget priced ones. From my experience the biggest differences are in the castle nuts. Some of them have big slobby teeth (Guntec) and some of them don't have provisions to stake the castle nut (ATI). I do like the UTG Pro line of receiver extensions (buffer tubes) with the exception of the "Made in USA" laser engraving on the side. However, one could argue that is much better than "Made in China" down the side! I have also used a bunch of Anderson tube kits with zero problems.

Most of mine are Magpul CTRs, but for lightweight the MFT Minimalist is hard to beat.

Yeah, I forgot about the Minimalist. Nice stock. Has a very tight fit, as well. For some reason I think they look a touch space-age but stocks really are a matter of personal preference.

If you have a heavier profile barrel you may want to look at a stock that puts a little weight in the rear. That is, something to balance out the weight so the gun is not front heavy.

Don't overlook the RockRIver operator stock both fixed and carbine. Great cheek weld, excellent quality and feels great in the hand.

I have Magpul MOE, SL and UBR and also BCM Mod 0.

The UBR balances perfectly on an 8" .300 setup with an Omega out front. It is heavy, but if you have a front heavy gun it might be perfect. Once you get shooting you don't even notice.

The SL locks up nicely on all of my buffer tubes and is super comfortable and is well built. This is probably my favorite of the bunch.

The MOE is an MOE. It works and it is tough, but it rattles a bit on all my buffer tubes.

The BCM Mod 0 is great as long as it is on a tube that it likes. Two of my 3 mil-spec tubes it fits awesome on, but the PSA it rattles like a saber.

Curious why I never see the Hogue stock/grip recommended. Do they have a bad rep? I put one on my rifle and it seems pretty nice from what I can tell. Reviews I read before deciding to buy it seemed to be favorable as well.

I have the Hogue adjustable on one of my rifles.  I like it a lot.  They have a feature built into it that totally prevents looseness and rattle.  Lots of sling attach points.

I have an MOE SL on my 16" mid gas carbine, and a VLTOR EMOD on my mid gas rifle with 18" SOCOM barrel. I like them both on their respective rifles for function and balance.

Magnum announced the GEN 2 version of the UBR that's supposed to be lighter and cheaper than the GEN1. Supposed to be out this coming Spring. If you have some time to kill, that would be worth waiting for.
