It's about time to rebarrel mama's ar15 "spr-ish" rifle.  She is currently running an 18" barrel with a mid length gas system.  The rifle has an 11" quad rail on it.  We are long range shooters so we would like to go with a little bit longer barrel for a little more velocity.  At the same time we don't want to have to replace the handguard.  So that leads us to considering a 20" barrel with a mid length gas system.

We understand it could be a little "over gassed".  How much of an issue will this cause us?

For the price of hand guards  I'd just go full rifle set up

You will get better velocity with a 20" rifle length gas system as well as less felt recoil and wear, etc.

What is your definition of "long range"?

Just get a new handguard

In my opinion the definition of long range changes with the caliber being used.  I have video of her hitting a full size silhouette at 942 yards with this rifle.  Most of her shooting is 100 to 600 yards though.  We decided to go ahead and stick with an 18" barrel and mid length gas system.  Gaining an extra 2" of barrel wasn't worth it to us to buy another hand guard in the 14 to 15" length that costs almost as much as the barrel itself.  We also decided it wasn't worth the risk to try a 20" with mid length gas and end up having issues so we decided to stick with what we know works.

How critical is it to have a FF quad rail versus a FF tube?  12" FF tubes are inexpensive compared to quad, mlok, or keymod rails.

do they even make 20" barrels with mid gas?

A low profile gas block will not look to bad, or you could go with a rail gas block

Young Mfg 15" vented FF tube for $65

It will cover a rifle length gas block and look more balanced than an 11" hand guard on a 20" barrel.

THIS..

I used an "old" colt 20" HBAR barrel on my SPRish build and it shoots smooth as butter (after I swapped out the $15 "ebay special gas block" that I initially installed with a Rainier Arms takeoff part I had laying around)..

ETA:
I saw your response, I was questioning the move from 18-20", for the limited gains that the 5.56 will hold you to..
good decision to stick with the 18, imo

My 20" Armalite HBAR shoots really well, and accurately, with a full length gas tube. I'd guess a mid length gas tube would put extra wear on the bolt key gas receptacle thingy and increase recoil a little bit. I'd say use the system as designed by Stoner, but then I'm a troglodyte whose only short barreled 5.56 is a Kel-Tek PLR16.
