I built a mk18 upper to spec - 10.3 barrel, .07 gas port, 5 coil extractor spring and one-piece gas ring. ADCO cut the barrel and opened up the gas port. The gas port seems to be the right size and I used gas block alignment pins to ensure gas block was installed properly. The upper is sitting on a pistol lower with an H buffer. The bolt sometimes locks back, but it seems to fail more when the gun heats up. Also, I used the HB alignment pins. The .068 did not fit, so I used the .06 to align. I used my caliper to measure the pin and it read .07, so I am thinking it is the pin that is too big as opposed to the gas port being too small.

Thanks in advance for any ideas and advice.

so most of the time the bolt is failing to lock back?

I loaded a bunch of mags with one round. The first 10 or so were fine.  After those first shots it became hit or miss, mostly miss. When it would not lock back, I would get a "click" when pulling the trigger (on an empty chamber).

I'm thinking of getting drill bits to measure the gas port. I would have to figure out the equivalent size...

have you tried a lighter buffer?

No, I didn't have a carbine buffer with me since I figured H or H2 is what is used. I will do that next time. I'm also assuming that the pistol tube is the same length (internally) as a carbine buffer tube.

I believe the pistol tube is shorter internally, this with the H buffer is probably what your problem is

ah, makes sense. spring is more compressed so more resistance.

I had a build do the same thing with a Spikes ST-T2 Buffer twice with XM855. It was way early in the guns round count. No issues since and never any issues with XM193 or various match ammo.

I'd give it some more range time then swap the buffer to a lighter one if you keep having issues.

What ammo? MK18 gas port spec is probably only big enough to run M193/M855 and running anything less powerful will require a bigger port.

When you pull the bolt back manually, does it clear the catch much, or just barely? If you manually engage the bolt catch, does it have a good overlap with the bolt? I had one build with a buffer that didn't allow enough travel, had to shorten it a bit so that it could clear the catch. The catch also required modification to give it enough vertical travel to engage the bolt.

The pistol tube should not be shorter. Slap in a carbine buffer.

this or cut a coil or two off the buffer spring if you don't have a carbine buffer.

It should work with an H and H2. If the pistol tube is not shorter than a carbine tube, does this mean it is undergassed? I am looking for #50 and #51 drill bits to measure the port. If it is under .07 I am sending it back to adco.

yes you are correct that it should work with those buffers. It definitely sounds like a gas problem, but could be one of a number of things concerning operation of the carrier. most likely gas though.

Well, I'm at a loss. Just bought a #50 drill bit (0.07 ") and it fit through the gas port. I guess all that is left is that I measure the inside of my pistol buffer tube and confirm it is the same length as a carbine one and play with the spring and buffer. Unless anyone has other ideas...
