Hello all,

My AR-15 build has come to a stopping point....I would like to cerakote this weapon with the dark earth “C” series but do not have access to a sand blaster as prescribed in the cerakote manual…is there any work around with certain grit sand paper or anything else to ensure my weapon is properly prepped for paint? I am especially worried about the lower receiver as it has never been painted/anodized. …Any help would be much appreciated. Keep Calm and Gun On!

Nope, needs to be blasted with the right grit to get the angular profile on the suface for the Cerakote to adhere properly.

The ones I have done at home all turned out great, I used 220 grit automotive sandpaper.

I'm in the same boat. I think I will end up trying the sandpaper on one lower to see how it works out. It seems to work ok according to the few write ups/reviews I've read.

Slight thread jack: any one know of any cerakote kit specials for black friday?

Harbor Freight is your friend, for less that $20 you can purchase a small handheld blaster, do it right the first time as a solid finish is all about the prep.

I buy all my cerakote from columbia coatings, quick shipping.  They are buying it in quantity and braking it down into their own containers.

This and a $3.00 bag of play sand from Lowe's to feed the blaster and you are in business.

Try a local powder coat shop, custom paint shop, some NAPA auto parts stores, large motorcycle shops and I'm sure there's more. Most of those type of places media blast. I'd stick with what is recommended.

Are you baking your parts after spraying?

Yes it will, but I still recommend a light blasting with 120AO.

I have a question. Do you supply your own cerakote or do businesses just charge you a "material fee"?
If i buy some for upper, lower, handguard, how much do I need? Can any powder coating place (trustworthy with good workmanship of course) do cerakote?

ETA: I want to do it myself. Guess Ill practice with misc things around the house before I go to the real thing..

A 4oz bottle should cover 2 rifles.

Preval sprayer from Lowes worked great.
