Hi,

I am currently building my first ar 15 rifle. I have bought a complete factory one before and now decided to build my own. I have already purchased a bcm 16in hammer forged upper and now looking to get a lower for it. I have been doing tons of research and I still can't decide on a lower brand wise. So I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions or things to keep in mind when looking for one. I am sure this question has been asked a million times before. Any help would be appreciated.

decide if you want billet of forged then pick a roll mark. i really like aero lowers but the price of anderson lowers are hard to beat

Ok thanks. Is there an advantage of having a billet lower versus a forged lower?

No, in fact, they can present problems with some handguards fitting...

Well I beg to differ.

Billet lowers usually have better aesthetics, and more features. Such as better machining/finishing, different design, built in ambi controls etc..

They aren't for everyone, but there is a market for them for a reason.

I used a Mantis Arms billet lower. I have to admit that I'm not crazy about their logo but I like the built in trigger guard and the overall appearance. I think the best looking feature is the trigger guard. It is more squared-off as opposed to rounded/curved. I put an SD-E trigger in there and it looks great. But, like others have said, they are not for everyone.

Ok ya have to keep that in mind. I have heard a lot of people talked about spikes tactical lowers. Are they any good? The noveske lowers look really nice.

I built my son a dedicated .22lr with a Spike's Calico Jack lower. Everything went together and works fine. Spike's is definitely GTG and Noveske are probably the Rolls Royce to some folks here but they have a price tag to suggest that.

I just came across this by accident and thought it might help. Spike's lowers on sale for $89.99 Not a bad price either. I paid $115 last December.

That does look like a good price. Tha me for the link. Thanks for some help ya I know noveske are expensive. Waste sure if there would be a big difference. Also wasn't sure if the spikes would ha e trouble matching up to the bcm or not. Should I get a lpk from the same manufactor that I get the lower from? Plan is to put a  Alg act trigger in it.

Mil-spec LPK should fit in an Mil-spec lower. I may be wrong but I don't think you can put billet lower on a forged  upper. If I am incorrect I welcome the flogging so I can learn too!

Mil-spec forged lowers are roughly the same. Nothing fancy until you get to the "big names". I have used $200 lowers and now I mill my own 80% lowers. I see no real diff  short of price! ALL my 6 rifles perform 100% of the time

O ok thanks that helps a lot. I might just go with spikes tactical lower and see how it goes. I know I can get there lpk w/o a trigger so that will help.

You can check redbarnarmory.com there you can build a LPK with exactly which parts come in your LPK. I am pretty sure the ALG trigger is one of the FCG that's in their  customized LPK

Unless it's some totally proprietary thing, should be no problem.  Having said that, while it will physically fit, it may not look right.  Some billets are practically identical to forged except for things like machined in trigger guards or enlarged mag well flares.  Others, however, may be thicker around the entire mag well or have other contours that don't match a forged upper.

I built one rifle on an Ares Armor raw 80% billet when they were on sale for $58.  It looks just fine with a forged upper:

and yes, I did the horizontal cuts to add a little character.

SixtySixDuece: thanks for clearing that up! I like the detail on your lower. I think I'm gonna use Ares Armor's 80% billet  lower to build my wife her .308 for Christmas.

Joshb: Glad I could help with your LPK. I learn new stuff here everyday

Go with the Signature; they're really nice.  Still on sale for $160, too (anodized one).

I have one sitting here, just need another $1k for the other parts.  lol.  Gonna use an ACS-L or STR stock, MIAD grip and PSA's 18" free float upper.

Yes sir! That's the one I want! My wife is best shooter in family and she wants a long range rifle!
