Hello,

I've read many posts regarding punches for building.  Some say to get them and others don't think they are necessary.  Since I'm beginning my first build I'll ask for help.  Sorry if I'm "kicking a dead horse".  Do I need roll pin punches AND starter punches?  If not which should I get to make things go easier?  Thanks!

John

You need mostly roll pin punches, since you'll be dealing mostly with roll pins.  But any small metal rod will often suffice.
What's more important is that you have a punch (or some tool) of the right size.  I think I have 3-4 sizes, pretty much has covered everything from Glock's to AR's.

Do you have to have them? No. Do you want to make your life easier? Then YES. They are not expensive. I have a Grace set of roll pin punches. I think it's a set of 7. They were like 20 bucks. I have a set of Wheeler brass punches as well. Your build will be easier and will come out better.

I have been meaning to get roll pin starters but my needle nose pliers work. Stay away from Armorers Kits on Amazon. Alot of the tools like barrel wrenches are cheap. Just buy the few specific items you NEED. Buy good quality and you won't be sorry

Pin punch's come in handy for a build. You can use them to hold the trigger assembly in place while you install as well as use them to install the roll pins. So from a multiple use standpoint I would say invest in the pin punch set.

Roll pin starters are nice to have but not necessary.

for the trigger pin alignment I use a framing nail.

I have punches and drifts and all sorts of nice tools, but for assembling a lower, I don't use them.
