Trying to get a gas block off.  The thing won't budge.
I heard heat will do the trick
someone recommended an oven for 450° for about 20m in
Assuming there are no plastic parts will this hurt my barrel/upper in any way?

No, it wont hurt it. However, you would be better off with a torch and slowly heating the area in question.

the reason you heat the parts is because it contracts and expands differently than the rest of the items you're trying to separate it from. if you heat all of the parts together they will expand and contract at the same rate and you will have accomplished nothing

Heat the gas block only then run cold water through the bore just before you tap off the gas block.  It may just fall off at that point.

is the gas block pinned?

no, set screws came off fine but the actual gas block won't budge

The set screws may have had red loctite on them and if too much was used perhaps it got between the barrel and the gas block. A little heat should help in a case like this.

It doesn't have to be a big torch. One that runs on small propane bottle that is generally used to do plumbing around the house is more than adequate.

Heat directly to the gas block is no issue. You will NOT want to heat the whole upper as there are springs on the dust cover and forward assist you may damage or reduce their tension from the heat.

You can probably heat it enough with a candle.

Only do this if you want to clean up a sooty nasty mess, go to harbor freight and buy a cheap heat gun.

That temperature will break the temper (over age) the aluminum in the upper.

Barrel steel should be fine.

Red Loctite disintegrates at 500 degrees...heat the block tap it off......done deal.

At 450, you're getting into the heat range that is used to temper certain types of steel.
Don't know what affect it could have had on that aluminum upper, but if it was ONLY 20 minutes .... you might get lucky.
If any of the metal is exposed (bare), you have to watch so that the material doesn't begin to change color from the heat.  That would be a sign that the temper of the steel is being affected.
I'd keep the heat under 400.

probably have to set it up in a jig with a long string and hide behind a stump.  Make sure you get a you tube video of it for us.

nobody in the whole world has done it before.... How the hell do we know?

I'd tie a string to the trigger and run a couple of mags first.

It's fine.  I've heated uppers to hotter than that to break down loctite that was on the barrel nut threads.

You are not going to harm 7075 aluminum, 4100 series steel, or 416 stainless by soaking it at 450 for 20 minutes.  Not even close to harming them.
