So my main post was archived.

http://www.ar15.com/archive/topic.html?b=3&f=4&t=635437

So I now have a stripped lower, lower build kit, and stock. I am waiting on  my 9 pc Roll Pin Punch Set and Lower Receiver Magazine Vise Block to come in. I also bought a MagVault with Key Lock for safety.

Since this is my first build I am planning on buying a complete upper. Since I am new, I am thinking of getting a 22lr upper to get use to the gun and save money. I do plan on buying a 5.56 later down the road when I can afford it and the ammo.

What are some good new/used 22lr uppers. I have seen the Chiappa M4 .22LR Upper, but I prefer one without the front sight so I an put a red dot or scope on it.

Also, if anyone is around or familiar with Huntsville, Alabama, what are some local places I might can look. I bought my lower at Larry's Pistol and Pawn on sale, wish I had enough to buy two.

Thanks

A red dot or scope will work with a FSB - the red dot will co-witness with it and a 4x scope will make it 'disappear'. I'd read reviews before buying that Chiappa though. The ones I've read were mixed. I have a CMMG that I really like. FWIW I think you could get a decent (PSA) upper for around $200 less than the CMMG upper, use the money you save to buy ammo. Also 5.56 ammo is a lot easier to find than 22, at least in Reno.

I bought a Chiappa upper for ~$230, basically just for the barrel and bolt.  It has run fine so far.  Before I took it out for the first time, I chopped off the front sight with a Dremel as I won't be using it in the end anyway.

I'm in Huntsville, and outside of Larry's, there aren't many other options for shopping, although you could try Last Resort Guns and Ammo over in Madison.  Gander Mountain may carry AR type 22lr stuff, but I've always found them to be overpriced...

glocker,

I checked out Palmetto State Armory and the cheapest they had was $330.00. They did have an upper without the front sight for $450.00. All other were out of stock.

Thanks!

Can't say as I have priced out a .22lr (gun parts) lately but, With the current lack of supply of the ammo, prices are way up there. Do you think you will be saving money going that way, over a 5.56 direction?

So if everything goes right this weekend, I might have time to build the lower and have a picture post too.

As I am building, what gun oil do you suggest. I have reviewed the Midway USA video and he also uses lithium grease.

Thanks in advance...

Opinions on 1:7 or 1:9?

Also, since I will have to buy the BCG and CH separately, should I worry about the headspace?

Getting close........

One other question...

I was looking at comp BCG and some were listed as Full Auto Bolt Carrier Group.

What is the difference?

Will it work in a semi auto?

Thanks again!!!

The only difference between a full auto BCG and a semi auto BCG is the bolt carrier. On the semi auto bolt carrier the under side of the carrier has a section that is shorter than on the upper part of the carrier. A full auto carrier has both sections the same length. This is so the carrier can engage an auto sear. It makes no difference in a semi auto rifle which of the carriers is used because there isn't an auto sear anyway.

Hey I'm a new to this as well and trying to stay on a budget. I bought this BCG from aim. I would run it by the pros here because I better deal may be out there it was kind of an impulse by for me. Hope I did ok.

Not a pro but am a bargain hunter, I've had great luck with the AIM bolt.  Haven't seen anything out there cheaper that I would trust.  You made a good choice.
