I know it wouldn't be truly "retro" but I'm envisioning an A1 receiver, a dissipator barrel and FSB, triangular handguards and an A1/A2 butt stock.

Anyone ever see a build like this?

I should google before I post.  Apparently thats a "605" clone?

Only in Gunstruction. I do much prefer the look of the triangle handguards to the new ones. I think it would be a sweet build.

For the record, 605s never worked too well.  Good idea, and neat looking, but fickle as produced.   Can be made to run well with tuning, though (e.g., opening up the gas port).

The guys in the retro forum can help you out with gas port size if you wanted to do a true 605 which uses a cut down rifle gas system 20" barrel but for me I went the dissy route with carbine gas and rifle position FSB. Runs all day long and one of my favorites!

I did the same thing with a Bushmaster government profile dissy barrel, if your going for a good running dissy barrel I'd go PSA or Bushmaster. Bushmaster was the first company to reliably get the Dissapator running and could have cornered the market on them if they had their sh*t together and patented the design. The design eventually got into other companies hands and now many companies offer a Dissy, but some are paperweights. Palmetto's work just as good as the Bushaster, I've shot both. and honestly would go with whoever has one thats in stock.

I don't care to use a rifle length gas system unless that becomes my only option.  I'd also prefer not to buy an upper assembly since they tend to be A2 or more commonly A3 receivers.

So buy a 604 upper receiver and a BM Dissy barrel, slap them together, throw on a set of A1 triangle hand guards and screw on a 3-prong flash hider. Don't forget to cut off the bayonet lug....

I bought a Dissy upper half from PSA last week...waiting on delivery.  I'll be happy to post a review when it comes in.  You they're pretty cheap right now, you could go that route and just switch to a different upper.  Not sure if they sell the dissy barrel (with pinned FSB) alone or not.  Personally I don't want the tower sight without it being pinned, so just buying a mid length and clamping on a sight tower isn't really an option for me.

I'm half considering buying a DPMS or Del-Ton dissipator barrel and turning it down to take a low profile gas block in the mid length position, then plugging the port under the FSB.  Currently seems to be about the cheapest option.

That's cheaper than the PSA Dissy (mid length, lo pro gas block) upper half at $379?

I built this upper several years ago from parts I had hanging around ...it runs just fine on a rifle length gas system, a 16" barrel and a muzzle brake

Just for a heads up, Del-ton uses a rifle length gas system on their Dissys. PSA or Bushmaster would be the best options for just the barrels w/ carbine gas length systems. Yes, both PSA and BM have the FSB pinned correctly, and the gas blocks are just shaved/cut down FSB's that are pinned. It's a toss up the BM is $235.00 shipped and I think the PSA may be around the same if not a little cheaper.

Considering I'd have to buy an A1 receiver either way, yes.
