Well I have a piston system that won't work with the hand guard that I currently have, I don't want to sell the piston system to get the handguard to work, & don't want to sell the handguard to get the piston to work.
I need the dimensions on a mil spec barrel nut so I can mill my spikes barrel nut down so the piston rod has the adequet clearance on the spring & bushing. After i get that part fixed I can put it all back together & test fire!
If only Adams Arms made an adjustable piston rod where you can adjust the spring and bushing so it would work on whatever brand barrel nut.
Thanks for the help...

80% billet lower (now 100%)
Phase 5 pistol buffer tube assembly
Phase 5 bolt catch
mil spec trigger (waiting on the Echo trigger to ship)
Magpul MOE grip
mil spec upper receiver
AimPoint red dot comp3
8-1/2" 300 Black out barrel 1/8 twist
Adams Arms pistol piston system with xlp & low mass carrier
Spikes 7" quad rail
Silencerco brake (waiting on stamp for can)

I may have left out a few parts will post a picture soon, I stipped the upper to work on it.

If you can mill your nut to let the bushing set at .850 your hand guard should work as long as you have the clearance in the upper part of the hand guard for the drive rod. This dimension will get you the .015-.025'' free play you need at the gas block.

Thank you! That's the measurement I was looking for should have it ready this weekend to test fire.

Looks like this will work now, time to put it all back together & test fire this weekend!

I think i too also need to enlarge my gas port, it will eject but fail to load.

whats your load data?

i just tested mine and it functioned flawlessly with

147gr Everglades FMJ
17.4gr of h110 (anything under and it would eject but not pickup a round. all rounds cycled suppressed)
CCI 400 primer

set to middle of cannelure.

also just to confirm the gas block is set to fully opened right?

Still having feeding issues,
drilled out gas port to .125
took the weights out of the buffer
cut a few coils off of buffer spring
the ammo I'm using is the Remington 300 Blackout 115 grain, I'm thinking it's the ammo so I'm going to look for ammo with a little more umph...
I do think it will cyle the supers just fine with the can (when it comes in) but I would like it to fire supers without the can & subs with the can. If I can't get her running right im gonna go back to DI, & pull the piston
off & build a 7 1/2" chambered in 5.56...

After stripping it down, I think I've found the problem. looks like the gas block is not aligned properly. If I line it up, the bolt will not go into battery. So I'm guessing that the gas port is out of spec, or the Adams Arms push rod is out of spec.

So what I have down is shortened the push rod by 1/16th of an inch. Now to go & try to test fire this weekend with the Remington ammo, or ill let one of my buddys test it out for me at his place. I'm thinking it will work now because it will get the correct amount of gas, do you guys think that if it gets more gas it will release the bolt a little quicker so that theres a little more pressure to push the bcg back stronger? cross yo fingerz again!!

The issue there is that there is no mil-spec for pistol length gas systems, so different companies drill the port in different places.  you can trim back the striking face of the drive rod until you get correct gas hole coverage and the proper gap in-between the carrier key and the striking end of the drive rod.
let me know if you have any questions

Yes, I've done that last night. I need to get an assortment of ammo to rule out its the ammo, it's just kind of hard with my schedule, but I will post findings of this when I go to test fire again this weekend...

Update....

had to remove the spring in the BCG for it to cycle a round. It will cycle a round in the chamber, but will not hold back the bolt on last shot. I'm thinking I need to drill my gas port a little bigger, cause correct me if I'm wrong. If the XLP gas block is wide open and shooting supers will it not cycle subs reliably? I believe I need more gas and need to be able to cut the gas back with the block. So I can turn it up when running sub sonic suppressed.

also thinking if I get more gas I can put back the original buffer spring & take the cut one out cause its really short....

FYI, if you cut a spring (take coils off) not only will it make it shorter but it will typically stiffen the spring not lighten it which is what I believe you were trying to do.

I ran into the same short stroking problem when running an AA set up, carbine gas and 300 blk.

I also am going to have to do this but with my Odin Works Forend adapter. Love my KMod forend. Can I get some clarification of the .850 measurement? I'm gunna chuck it my mill and I would like to know is it .850 'down', like going from the front of the rifle or .850 from the receiver side to where the bushing will go?

Its .850 from the end of the barrel nut you intend on using. The AA kit is designed to set at .850 on the nut same as mil spec barrel nut once tightened, this will get you the .015 - .025 free play at the gas block need to run properly.

This thread has alot of good info.  I am going to be doing my 3rd AA build soon, but first with a URX II.  Now I am just waiting on an Adams Arms upper receiver to get in stock.  6-8 week estimation......

BTW:  Nice looking build.  My first AA build was a pistol too.

I'm back. I found out that I'm modifying my barrel nut in a similar but different way (Thanks, Aaron @ Odin Works). I would post Pictures but Odin Works sent them to me, I will post pictures of my final build instead. I also, ran into a different problem. I have noticed that the bushing that goes in the gas tube hole on the upper has a chamfer on it. Now thinking along the installation and operation side of things, I want to say the chamfer will be towards the front of the receiver, along the path of installation. The installation instructions do not specify and I know someone out there might ask. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Flat side towards but face chamfered side towards spring. But I removed the bushing and replaced the spring with a very weaker spring. I'm was trying to get the bolt to unlock easier so there's a tad more pressure to force the bolt back. Still haven't tried other ammo yet, maybe tomorrow I can pick some up and see if it's my ammo I'm using. Thanks by the way!!

I had problems same as you.  I switched my upper to another lower from another rifle and it worked fine.  I found out that the geissele trigger was causing the issue.  Switched it out with a regular mil spec trigger and it worked fine.

I wouldnt screw with the gas port.  It should be getting enough gas as it is.

Already tried that, have another pistol lower with mil spec buffer tube, buffer & spring.
