Curious to know how much rearward travel the AA drive rod experiences during operation.

I am assuming it is all dependent upon the ammo used (power) and where the gas regulator is set.

Is there any way to figure out a max and min travel distance?

I would assume it travels until the gas stops pushing it.  measure how long the gas plug goes into the drive rod and you should have your answer.  This is just a guess - my piston build is still a pile of parts - I'm by no means an expert.

I run my piatol with the MI SS Gen II FFHG and to make it work I had to cut the drive rod spring down to about 2/3 its original length.  Didn't affect a thing.  If you look at the pistol on an M-1 Carbine the whole thing is like a 1/4 inch long, so it doesn't take much movement to get the job done.

Anyone got a high-speed camera and a willingness to film a piston in action?

None of the above. The rod stops traveling when the shoulder on the drive rod hits the bushing that sits in front of the barrel nut. Total travel distance is about an inch, maybe a little less.

A somewhat related question:  How can one tell if the rod and BCG key is set up with the correct spacing.  Meaning is there too much or too little clearance? Or is there a number in mills or mm for it?

Op rod travels about half an inch to cycle the BCG.

Take the hand guards off. Leave the BCG in battery. Grab the op rod and you should feel just the slightest movement rearward til it contacts the strike face of the BCG. The gap between the op rod and BCG strike face should be the thickness of about one or two business cards.

Thanks, I should have been able to have figured that out.  Well, that is why this forum is great.
