Hey everyone I have been using an AA 7.5 upper and loving it.  Super reliable etc.  I am in the middle of doing a somewhat MK18/M4CQB upper atm and am kind of wanting to "stealth" piston it and still keep the front sight block/post.  Now that I am seeing Midway is having a decent price on them I was considering snagging one up.

That being said, I have not read much on these kits/systems as of recently and was just wondering if there is anything I should be worried about or should know before I go ahead and purchase one of these kits?  Not really a vs thread as I know about PWS, POF, LWRC, AA, HK, etc.  Would just like some solid info on the Osprey system.  Install looked easy enough but is there excessive carrier tilt or other shortcomings of the system that and things of that nature?  Also I believe they will fit under a KAC RAS as that is the same inside diameter of the drop in plastic and heat shield hand guards, but if anyone could give me a definite answer that would be great.

Also is anyone running this system with a can?
Thanks,
Nik

I've had my Osprey gas piston system installed for a little less than a year. This was my first build and I decided piston was the way to go. I love that it keeps the gun nice and clean and it is rock solid reliable. Zero failures due to the gas system. And install was easy, even for a noob like me. Took me way more than the 4 minutes they like to brag about, but still pretty straightforward.

But the downside for me is that almost nobody make a free float handquard that will work without alterations. And I hate the delta ring/forend cap method of handguard attachment. The handguards that come with are junk, so I'm using the Magpul forend. Better, but not what I want. Osprey Defense was bought out some time back. And now their web site sucks. No support whatsoever, and no new support from handguard makers either. Unless directions change, I think the Osprey will become a footnote in AR piston history.

If I was to do it over again, I wouldn't buy it. I wish I had bought the Adams Arms unit instead. Maybe the design isn't as good, but they got the head start, and they continue to have better support all around.

OP, I won't go into the whole 13er or 14er game as I don't play that way.  What I will politely ask is that you do a really good search prior to making yet another piston thread.  This subject is O-L-D.  A quick Google search reviles pages and pages of results.  Some of the other old timers in here tend to get a bit cranky about newbs coming in here making new threads without searching first.

I have personally had one of these and it ran flawlessly.  I would still have it but I sold it to my little brother and it's still running strong and hard.  I've been playing around with getting another one.  It's a rock solid system with only 3 parts from what I recall, so there is less to break, less to fail, and less to loose.  The Magpul MOE clam-shells are good to go.  Unless your shooting distance, extreme accuracy, are worried about barrel harmonics, or just want a tacticool look.  I personally carried a Bushy Carbon 15 equipped with an Osprey Defense and Moe Clam-Shells for a personally supplied duty patrol rifle.  They do appear to be under new ownership.  Here

Here is what I was talking about.....  Google can be your friend.

I realize this topic is purdy dang OLD thats why I wanted some newer/more up to date/long term use reviews on this thing seeing as almost all the reviews are archived or rather dated.  I did realize the customer service was on a decline and/or non existent from my research which is why I was wondering if they are good to go once properly installed.  Again from previous research. I noticed some people were having to modify their hand guards because of the kidney shaped design of the piston which is why I am wondering if I will have to modify my drop in KAC RAS unit, as I am running a VFG and WML off of it as well and am not looking to free float this thing.
Thanks for the responses thus far.

OP, have Osprey kits in my first two builds and they have been flawless. Free float handguard selection is limited unless you're willing to spend. However, I was able to find something...Carbon Fiber handguards that attach in the exact same method as the AP Custom handguards, and about half the price.

I believe the only real reason the Osprey kits weren't a hit was free float handguard selection, and maybe the fact they beat the hell out of the barrel nut without the spring/cup that the AA kit has. Can remedy this with a steel barrel nut.

As far as fitment to a KAC RAS, Osprey says a minimum of 1.750". A couple Midwest Industries handguards are suppose to fit with minor filing to the retaining clip, such as the SS Gen 1, as I've seen it done. You'd be safe with an ID of 1.8"

For me, Osprey is good to go.
