For the owners what's their thoughts on accuracy, reliability, quality, even ease of maintenance.
Any major downfalls or design issues?

Thanks

Fantastic weapon.  I got the CLA w/ a Trijicon and it totally totes my goats.  10's on all your points, with the cleaning possibly being the biggest draw.  No carbon fouling to speak of, just some soot like crap that can be wiped out with some Hoppe's or whatever flavor you desire.  The trigger is kinda crap though...  Many say it will smooth out with use (it will) and I took a fine file and dremel to mine, but I got impatient and dropped in a POF.  I paid $1499 for mine just after (? ) Newtown and think the prices have dropped just a bit YMMV.  You should also get a unique range bag and 2 PMAGS.  The bag is good quality; but not Drago or Eberlestock level.  Accuracy is perfectly acceptable, 2 MOA with 55 and 62 grain mil-surp stuff.  I don't practice for precision, I shoot cans, clay pigeons and plates and stuff.

I got mine just after they came out.  It's been a champ.  As the previous poster said, trigger needs work but it is easy to clean.  The only draw backs that come to mind is that if you get the full quad rail it will be heavy and my rifle does not like or function with steel cased ammo.   Other than that I love it.

I have the E model and It's a very good rifle. It has ate every type of ammo I've tried including reloads. I've not tried steel cased ammo, but the issues are noted above. The trigger is mil-spec, but it's not so bad. I didn't really care for the butt stock it came with and replaced it with a Magpul stock.

After owning this rifle for the over a year I think the biggest downside is the 1:9 barrel twist. My rifle does not shoot heavier bullets well s it's a limitation of sorts. My next AR, possibly a build, will have a 1:7 twist.

I really like the piston system and I can shoot 1" groups at 100yds so it is accurate. I'm working on shooting tighter groups with the right reloading recipe (and better marksmanship) and I think the rifle can do it.

What the ideal bullet weight that you have found for the 1/9..... 62gr ? 69gr ?

My SR 556 doesn't shoot either the 62 grain or 69 grain very well. Surprisingly I get my best groups with 52 grain HPBT 52 grain SMK's. The Hornady 52 grain HPBT Match projos shoot almost as well.

I've also got a SR556E and it has been running like a champ since I got it nearly a year ago. Very well made machine.

Please let me clarify. I'm speaking about precision shooting. I can hit a silhouette all day with 62gr  Green Tip from Lake City, but it's not going to result 1" groups. The 55gr Lake City can shoot 1.5" groups. I've tried 69gr Sierra's with mixed results, but it was only a handful from a friend. My best loads so far is using a 52gr Hornady Match HPBT over 25gr of H335. I think this combo is capable of sub-MOA, but I'm not.

I just started to reload for my Ruger yesterday.  (Never reloaded for an AR before)  I have a 6.8 and a .556C version to load for but I'm starting out with PPU .223 cases, CCI 41 primers  IMR 4895  and Sierra 63gr and 65gr SPs.  Anyone use these compunants in your Ruger and if so, how does the load datta in the books reflect what you are finding in your guns?

I'v had mine for about  1 1/2 yrs and it's been perfect, well made , easy to clean , eats everything I feed it (I don't use steel case ammo ) runs great......I have two small complaints.......I had to replace the trigger, the factory trigger was what I call a lawyer trigger,   and the weight   unloaded  with an eotech 512 it weighs a hair over 9 llbs

My SR-556E is tops on all of your points.

The trigger was heavy (as mentioned above) but I fixed that with a Geissele SSA-E.

The other thing I didn't like was the stock.  I replaced it with a Magpul STR.

With good optics and hand loads, my rifle will shoot five into 1" easily and go all the way down to groups as small as 5/8".

In Ruger threads like this that I have noticed, One thing you will notice is there will be lots of 13'ers and 14'ers singing their praises. You won't see many of the old timers with experience doing it.

Take that for what it's worth.

What does that have to do with anything?  The same is true all across the boards.  There are a TON of new members all over the place.

exactly what it means, the last few SR556 threads, lots of the low post count new guys come along talking about how great they are. Very few people who have been around a long time say anything good about them. I am impartial since I dont/nor ever will own one. IMO piston AR's are an answer looking for a problem.

Hello, guess I'm a 14'er and this my first post and the sr556e is also my first ar rifle. ( a gift for my bd from my brother )  I have been to range twice and used federal ae in 62 and 55 grn, went through @ 400 rounds total and have no malfunctions of any sort. Off the bench with sand bags and open sights the groups are around 8" in dia. Mounted a leopould v-1 2x7 and I cut those groups by 50%. The trigger was really bad and I replaced it with alg defense, it is hard to tell the difference after switching it out. After @ 200 rounds the bolt and carrier can be wiped off with a dry rag and be clean as new, the piston needs clr on the rag to return it to looking new. This is the most reliable semi rifle I've ever owned, it's also the poorest accuracy I've ever had from an out of the box rifle. I don't consider myself a great shot or a poor one either, though this thing has me on the fence to reload for it or not. I think it's a great rifle for what it's intended for, just disappointed in the group size for. Is this normal for average ar out of the box in this price point?

The SR556 is a great rifle for the money.  The points to be aware of are as follows:

- Weight:  The standard model is heavy when compared to DI and higher dollar piston guns.  My advice is to go for the CLA model or the E model.  The CLA is the lightest overall, but has a fixed flash hider.  The E has a removable flash hider, and is only other model with the modular handguard (other than the Varmint gun).

- Trigger:  The stock trigger on mine was the heaviest AR trigger I had ever felt.  A Geissele is a fantastic replacement, but on a budget, it's hard to beat the $45 ALG QMS or the $60 ALG ACT.   This is a must if you buy this rifle.

- Stock and grip:  The rifle comes with the bog standard M4 stock and a rubber A2 grip with finger grooves.  This is up to preference, but I would replace these two parts (and the triggerguard) with Magpul parts and be done.

- Sights - The CLA comes with Samson metal BUIS, the E model comes with plastic back up sights.  Both fold, both will work fine.

- Reliability:  Mine ate both steel case and brass ammo without any failures.

- Accuracy: Mine was about a 1.25" - 1.5" rifle with iron sights, but I never really tried too hard.  Accuracy was plenty good for a battle rifle.

I have owned a ruger SR556 for years and many thousands of rounds . It is a reliable and well built rifle . the only thing that it will need is a new trigger group. Mine had about a 9 pound pull, so I put a Geissele SSA into it and it shoots great . it is also a little on the heavy side compared to the DI   AR`s.

Maybe because the OG's have a safe full of Colts, and/or can afford a Noveske.  As for me, I'd love to have a Colt HBAR or NM, but I just don't like carbines.  Middy's are the way to go for me.  My Ruger is the check in the box for "piston" and I'm not inclined to replace it.  Add another?  Maybe, of any brand,  but I'm saving up to start reloading.

Just got mine....SR556C. Put about 300rds through it and I'm impressed. Shoots very smooth and sub MOA at 100yds from my bench/bag. I only used 55gr and 62gr FMJs.

My complaints are

1. Stock has lots of play... Typical for most carbine stocks.
2. Trigger is brutal....plan on polishing or buying a new one.
3. Hair too heavy but with the ways it's outfitted its more than acceptable.

My likes are

1. Feels balanced and shoulders well
2. Damn nice rail and sights
3. Great looking rifle.
4. So freaking easy to clean
5. Adjustable gas regulator
6. Came with 3 PMags and a decent carry case.

I've only shot an LMT piston upper previously so my piston AR experience is surely limited but I really like this rifle....a lot. Maybe and old dog can learn new tricks!!!

More range time yesterday....groups hovering right around 1MOA. Some a hair larger and some a hair under but with the awful trigger I do get some fliers I'd like to claim mulligans on!!! I do have a new rtrigger on order but so far I am happy although maybe I should have went with the extra 1.5" of rifling with the 16.1 barrel. Waiting for my 1x6 scope to come in and see what it can do.

I've owned 2 SR556s. The standard and the "C" both are excellent weapons.  The "C" is better balanced.  I've owned a whole lot of ARs over the years and the Ruger is as good if not better than all of them.

Ive done a good bit of shooting with AR's and I have had a few failures, but with the SR556 Ive had only one. I have put a couple thousand rounds through it now all steel cased and =have had 1 issue. The extractor ripped the back of the steel casing off. Not the rifles fault. I think it is a fantastic gun. It is a bit heavy, but if you hold it and carry it often the weight seems to go away. lol  great gun. fun to clean. Just wipe wipe wee.

Installed a CMC 3.5lbs single stage trigger and man is it nice. Damn fine trigger for the money in my opinion. No creep just BANG!!! This is just what the 556 was dying for!! Makes the rifle perfect in my opinion!!!

I'm not a '13 or '14 either and I have been shooting both piston and DI guns for many years.  I'll take the Ruger.  Good, reliable, and easy to clean.  OK, it weights a bit more than a DI gun, but my Rugers have run with no trouble at all.  But my friend's Bushmaster started to fall apart when the barrel nut worked loose.  He was rather embarrassed because he had been bragging on it.  Hey, things happen and it was his turn.  Not bashing Bushmasters (they have had enough bad press in recent years and they do make good firearms.)  I did put a National Match Trigger Group from Rock River Arms in to replace the stock trigger.  Much better, I must say.  Two stage and the second stage breaks like glass at about 4.5 lbs.  I used a Timney drop in trigger but it was too light (3 lbs) for my tastes.  YMMV.
