I have gone through the forums, and looked at some of the questions asked in the past. Also please keep in mind, I had an account here in the past, but that email was shut down due to being hacked, and I can't recover the password. With that out of the way.

I have 5000$ to spend on a Piston AR, I already own a couple of piston AR Rifles, so I am more looking for people who have fired different rifles and have experience. I know you cant avoid fan boys, and trolls. But I am looking for as unbiased as possible. I want a .308 Piston AR that shoots sub 1/2 MOA, and will hit targets out at 1000 yards. I just received my retirement letter, and I will be retired on Sept 15th, so this is my present to myself. I have the land to do, as my wife and I bought a house out in the country a couple of years ago planning for this. I am open to ANY suggestions. Just to give you an idea, I heard pros and cons of owning a Ruger SR556, and even with all the bashing I bought one after a trusted source told me they are very capable rifles. Mine fires 1.25 MOA out of the box with an Aimpoint PRO on it. So I am open to anything as long as its a reliable review. If you have fired multiple platforms I would love to hear what you have to say. This rifle will be used for hunting on our property as well as long range target shooting. It needs to be 1/2 moa chambered in 308. I really prefer my piston ARs as the ones I own have been flawless and accurate.

Want little groups? LaRue OBR. Kinda picky about ammo.

All around shooter? LWRC REPR. Pretty tight shooter for a "battle rifle".

If you've got money like that to burn why not get a SCAR 17s or if you really want to stick with AR platform you could look into the PWS Mk2 series or the LMT MWS in addition to what was posted above. Larue's are great but the wait is VERY long from what I hear. And really there's nothing wrong with the REPR if you can get your hands on one then go for it. It's a great rifle as well.

There are a lot of capable platforms. You can get a expensive rifle and it be a bad shooter, and you can get a cheap rifle and it could be a great shooter. Gas piston limits choices to Sig, F&D, Ruger, Colt, POF, and LWRC. Out of these the only one that guaranties accuracy is F&D and it is sub-moa only. Out of these my only experience is with the Ruger and it is limited so far. It appears it will be a shooter once the scope gets zeroed in, but will it be sub-moa? Once I know, I will post. So far it put twelve rounds under an inch at fifty yards with the iron sights and I had to use a purple Post-it just to see where to aim. The Sig and Colt were a little heavy for my taste, the F&D I am just not sure about (will pay them a visit some day), and I sure liked that LWRC Leonidas but it was just a little much at the time.

I'd personally go FN SCAR 17S. Extremely lightweight and accurate.

I have a little experience from firing friends and family weapons ... AK's, AR's, German machine guns.....

Anyway ironically I don't own a single AR ( I am currently building an SBR 300 blk )

That being said, I do own a FN SCAR 17 . I have enjoyed blasting coffee cans full of tannerite and the accuracy of 1 MOA to 1.5 MOA ....

Anyway I am just responding and giving my 2 cents....

The rifle is bone stock and ships in a crapy box with a bunch of packing grease to keep the thing from rusting for prolonged storage... after a long cleaning session ( there was a bunch of cardboard chunks on and inside the slide / bold carrier and upper receiver) I finally was good to go.

Shooting the rifle is an experience .... the heavy bolt / bolt carrier and stout return spring make it easy to control the recoil and have fast accurate follow up shots. Also the muzzle break which compared to the standard ARs I have handled,... the scar's muzzle blast is pretty substantially larger.

All things being said I love the rifle and its recoil .... in my opinion its kinda "spongy" to shoot ... a better way to say it is instead of a hard slap of the felt recoil "kick" there is softer "push" and then a positive pull as the massive bolt carrier travels forward and slams back into chambering another round. Since it is easy to manage the recoil it is easy to keep my sights on target resulting in accurate fast shots.

Basically I love the rifle for my purposes of having fun, blowing shit up, hunting deer out to my ethical kill range of 400 yards ( which would be comparable to your super accuracy requirement of 1 MOA ), target practice and just launching bullets to 600 or so.

<<<<Something to consider for your super accuracy requirement  that heavy moving mass back and forth may not be super conducive to getting the best accuracy , also it has a side chargin handle that reciprocates which may pull shorts .000000000122 off target at 2000 yards you'll be shooting >>>

things I don't like about the rifle..... it has so much plastic...the lower is plastic ( insert rattling sound here ) the stock is plastic ( insert rattling sound here ) The cycle design is so awesome i feel like the FN designers just spent like 1 minute to come up this the lower and stock..... I may be going with a after market billet lower that accepts standard mags.... the stock is another " i wish them made that better" part but it does get the job done.

As for if you should or should not buy this rifle ..... no matter what you buy you will always want another newer, cooler, more accurate one....Obviously I have GUN FEVER Hahaa... anyway if you want to go with the SCAR design / weapon.... for your accuracy requirement don't buy the SCAR 17 which has the med profile barrel, but instead go with the SCAR MK 20 SSR ( its a scar sniper variant) its more what I think your looking for....

BUT really.... honest I would...Let me keep this short ... If you want an accurate 308 that will go 1000 with .5 MOA ..... sorry to disappoint but go with a bolt gun ... very few AR plat forms can send a 308 bullet a thousand yards and keep 1 MOA. ....not many shooters are even capable of possessing the skills and training to make those shots.... in my opinion .... a custom Remington 700 action and a great barrel would get you the accuracy you want.

if you still want a 1000 yard 308 AR look into a custom build with super tight fits Les Baer maybe can do it ... other manf. are Knights Armament SR25 or M110, LWRC REPER, POF maybe?

Good luck hope this helps

I have shot a PWS, LWRCI, and own a POF. I will admit I'm biased toward the POF but that is because it is the gun i would put everything on. (Besides who doesn't recommend "their" brand?) I have the P308 14.5" Gen 3 and the thing is an absolute tack driver. Easily able to achieve sub MOA with many different loads. Really likes 168 gr Gold Medal Match, Black Hills match and Hornady, but it has cycled everything I've put through it including shit Wolf ammo, WITH the exception of the 110 gr TAP loads, little too light to cycle the massive BCG but turn the gas setting and they will, but i have shot 3 loads of 130 grain with great succes on coyotes. The other 2 companies make a great rifle, and an LWRCI is next on my list in 5.56, but your accuracy and caliber requirements gravitate toward POF rifles capabilities. Congrats on stepping up the power scale too. Theres nothing like lobbing a .30 caliber bullet from the AR platform in terms of accuracy and recoil and control. One thing i will say though, with the 14.5" barrel and the factory muzzle brake this thing is ludicrously loud. Indoor ranges have asked me not to shoot it. I no longer visit said ranges.

With that kind of budget build with the best of everything.  Parts are slightly more scarce for the AR10-style platforms, but with the right barrel free-floated and great glass you can shoot lights out.

On another subject... USMC doc... were you 8404 or med corps?

I own the following 308 platforms, DPMS SASS, to heavy but sub moa, Sig 716 ~1 moa, POF P-308 Sub moa, LMT MWS just barely sub moa and the HK MR762, sub moa. The 2 most accurate are the POF P-308 and the HK MR762. All have 16"barrels  except the SASS which has an 18" barrel. The HK has a very slight edge in accuracy. 5 shoot 100 yard groups average 0.68 moa to 0.75 moa for the POF. Some times a bit better in both. But the POF is $1000 less expensive. I'd recommend the POF but their quality control has been inconsistent. If you get a good one they are great. I saw a post of a 16" POF P-308 that shot an 850 yard 5 shot group that was 0.401 moa.  I've shot friends Larue OBR and the JP LRP 07 and of all the rifles mentioned the JP seems to me, with my limited experience on the last two, the most accurate and the handiest.

I agree with tickbob if you want a rifle that will keep 0.5 moa you will be hard pressed to find a 308 semi platform that will do that. You would be better off with a bolt action AIAW, GAP 10 , Surgeon or a TRG 22. I own the AIAW and the TRG 22 and both are capable of 0.5 moa or much better with the right ammo and shooter.

if you want a 308 for long distance target shooting that can hold tight groups in an AR platform look no further than LaRue

that being sad their rifles are DI and not piston, so if you are stuck on piston i am sure with quality ammo ruger's SR762 is up to the task, especially with properly reloaded ammo for it

Sounds like the HK Mr762 would be perfect for you.
It's very reliable and very accurate.

Only negative is the propriety magazines. It's HK so they are more expensive then DPMS pattern rifles.

For more info I would suggest going over to hkpro forums and asking around.

Congrats on the retirement!

I have a 16" REPR and it is sub moa at 100yds with good ammo but have not shot it at any other distances. I also have 2 Sako TRG's one in 300 win mag and the other in 338 Lapua. If it's amazing accuracy at 1000yrds or more that you seek get the TRG in 308 with a very good optic and don't frustrate your self trying to do it with a semiauto AR type platform.

1/2 MOA to 1KYDs is a very tall order. I'm not aware of any manufacturer putting out such a gun. That said, IMO the most accurate of what you are looking for are the LWRC REPR, Hogan or POF rifles.

Buy a scar 17, get an upgraded Giessele trigger, and some good glass.

Here's a good comparison video from MAC.
