Show me your salty clones. I'll start by posting my beat down looking XM177E2 that looks like it was rode hard and put away wet!

Very well done sir!!  The weathering is very nice, and the mismatched colors with weathering looks oh-so right.  That's a fantastic XM you have there!!

Thanks that's a Indiana Army Surplus upper I had anodized by US Anodizing. After some scrubbing with a wire brush and a sanding pad I thought it looked just right for this clone. Has natural pitting and the port door and forward assist were pitted with rust too. Got the grip and small parts off of a tiger imports kit from Indonesia. Were nice and crusty from tropical conditions! I know someone out there has some cool beat down looking clones! Let's see them!

Very, very nice.  A XM177 clone is very high up on my want list.  I can't find one put together or built, guess I'll have to make one.  Everytime I find a moderator equipped carbine it is either an A2 or A3.  :(

Your E2 looks fantastic!

The upper receiver & slip ring of my A1 is natural wear.

Along with my lack of camera skills, my camera is not the best.

ETA different pictures. These look any better? Current pictures. The previous ones were old.

Certainly not the most beat up of clones, but my 601's parts have certainly seen some use in their day.

The weathering looks great,  The only thing missing are the scratches from the metal hardware on web belts and lbe.  The ones carried a lot always seemed to have those.  For some reason all of these re-makes on the thread look "cleaner" than what I remember.  I don't remember any pitting but a great deal of scratches on the upper & lower receiver.  Also, the hand guards/butt stocks were in much worse shape.  My hat is still off to you who take the time to research and build these replicas.  I am afraid all of the imitated weapons that these resemble are probably either given to enemies of our country or destroyed.

Looks good. You did a good job on that lower. Ball peen hammer, files, wire brushes and steel wool really bring out the beauty! You will want to dent the reciever first to get the authentic look. Oh and hit the barrel and furniture up with steel wool. Also bleach is great at making surface rust!

I just got the barrel back from JT to switch out the double star F marked FSB that was on it from the factory. Replaced with a non F marked Colt M16A1 parts kit one.  He does great work. When I zeroed it I only had to go three clicks left to center. Came back beautifully new looking with fresh park. Had to scrub the barrel with a sanding block and throw some bleach on it for a couple of days to match it up with the rest of the parts (bleach makes bare metal rust fast).  Looks great now and I don't have to crank the front  sight down all the way to zero. How's this old sun bleached nylon sling. Think it might have been around the world and back. The buckle has no finish at all on it.

60 rounds unsupported fast as I can pull the trigger. After I zeroed it I wanted to test fire for function. Seems to work ok. I always aim low of the bullseye. Old Army marksmanship habit. Easier to adjust fire if you see you rounds are going low than flying over the target.

All dayum fine looking peashooters yall!

I LOVES me some "previously abused" looking old war whores!

Here's my contributions.

My former XM16E1 that I sadly had to part up and part with.

AND my M16A.75 middy that is a bit beat on. (Still need to finish an 80% lower for it and ditch the A2)

It is just a regular A1 grip. I took the noisy ass metal clip off a trashed sling and very judiciously cut the metal off and cut a gap and bent it a bit and clamped it back onto the grip.

I think I had to drill the holes out a bit.

I know these fine rifles could not have been used nearly as much as the "patina" says they've been used.  So what are some secrets of aging the rifles?  What are some solid techniques to weather the rifles without harming them?

Light sand paper, steel wool, oil and elbow grease. Some other use different techniques but it has always worked well for me.
