I can't count how many times I've seen photos of the Armalite collection that was owned by Reed Knight (pic below).  But in that collection, I don't recall ever seeing an AR-18/180.  I can recall the Stoner M63's, and I think there was an AR-16, but I don't recall any 18's or 180's.  Anyone have any photos of 18's or 180's from that collection?

Is that all there were in the collection?  I'm only seeing 3-4, I was hoping there were more in the collection.

What's up with the "auto cannon" pictured?  Did Armalite make such a weapon and if so does anyone know anything about it?

I knew I had seen them but only have a crappy picture, courtesy 04ZREX

That's still not very many 18/180's.  Where are the "S" models?  Where are the "in-between" rifles that show the evolution of the design?  Did it not evolve?

///It wasn't like these all were stored carefully in a climate controlled vault and Reed Knight just walked in with a wad of cash an bought all of them in an afternoon- he has had to build this collection from scratch one gun at a time.
In point of fact, any photo you see of the Reed Knight collection was illegally and covertly taken.  They have VERY strict rules on no photography due to the requirements of their insurance company in order to be able to get a policy to cover loss.

Actually, Knight bought in bulk from Armalite and Colt.  He also cleaned out more than one major private collection.

He did also travel the world to find some of his stuff.  Overseas I ran into the remnants of a Hollywood AR10 and when Knight saw the photos he admitted that he had parted it out years ago.

Also, photos have been allowed under certain circumstances.  No doubt some of you have seen some authorized photos in a recent publication on AR10s.

IIRC he also bought most of Gene Stoners collection when he was ready to pass it on to posterity. Part of Stoners employment contracts with Armalite, Colt and Cadillac Gage was that he got to keep the prototypes he invented. The designs he came up with were the respective companies intellectual properties but the protypes and due credit for the designs went to Stoner. Knight and Stoner were close friends.

Early pics of a few of Gene Stoners personal guns on page 16 http://www.gunsmagazine.com/1957issues/G0357.pdf

Reed Knight has spent 30+ years collecting these rifles from all over the world, and that many of them that may cover every single variation are not for sale, not available, or simply have been lost through time.

I'm aware of all this, just commenting on the fact that there's not much to the AR 18/180 collection.  I kinda thought there would be since it's the one rifle design that Armalite held onto for a significant period of time.

BE IT KNOWN

Every picture I post of Reed's collection was taken with his permission and displayed pursuant to his rules. Photos I display of Reed's collection taken by other invitees to the museum were also taken with his permission and displayed conforming to the rules and with copyright credit to the photographer.

I got a little mentally erect after just contemplating that.

When the new AR-16 is built, I will own one.

You notice I said "When" not "If"

As for the 180, I have contemplated "What is a complete collection"?

The more I find out about them the more I think I may never reach that plateau. But I'm trying.

I want to put together a "Reference Collection" One of every variation.

I used to think that was one Costa Mesa, one Howa, and one Sterling. Nope, it ain't that easy.

Heck I'm trying to finish the three variations I have found with the 180B.

I sold Reed Two Stoners and 8 original AR-10'S' back when with the one quick change heavy barrel. model. a  carbine, a factory Semi threaded for suppressor yeah {Original}the shorty Carbine, and a few others all new cond. He has the best in the u.s.a. for sure.I bought from Chuck Dorchester the last remaining pile of AR-18 and AR -180s they had barrels, parts, hand guards. springs.bolts unfinished receivers, five crates of it. and the prototype AR-10 AR-15 Belt feed device. {He said no need for it} they did whatever projects they wanted. remember this was 1979 through 1981, so every yahoo and his brothers son. has spread that stuff all over by now..

It was all a part of AR history, and won't be repeated again.   My 1980 Catalog picture was Serial #1040 on the ARM LTD. catalog.
yep good times. Thanks for the post it brought back some good memories.
