Bought on auction from Ft Riley. Got there and to my surprise all but two felt darn near 100 pounds each!

On closer inspection after the truck groaned home they are production done, even if it was a small contracted custom run. All the welds are in the same spot and all processes were uniform to the aluminum ones minus rubber coating on them.

Flat portions were cut and bent, not stamped, no dross or grinding marks anywhere exept the seam edges of the top cover. The only part they did wrong was not bending the arm lifting springs and securing them in a hole.

They all had different ID or SNs stamped into them in the top left corner too.

Very odd indeed. Who has seen these before?

Saw some last week for sale on here.

What do you use them for?

Maybe m4?

I hope you have 20 m1 garands to fill that rack.

The bottom angled plate that was welded to the M12 rack was a modification done to accommodate the M4 Carbine.  I had the same modification done to my M12 racks when I ran an armsroom at FT Campbell back in 00/01.

What parts are you trying to point out?

I just bought one of these this week and was told it was modified for M4s.

Im trying to point out the fact these are STEEL, not aluminum. 40lbs, vs 100. Not common, and a lot of work went into them. The aluminum ones are a dime a dozen in DOD and can be ordered through supply channels. They are all being turned in as now the modular space savers are taking over and are now in the supply chain.

These are marked with the same NSN and not a different one as a suitable substitute.

I have looked through supply descriptions without avail, as for standards DODM 5100.76 has the 500lb rule for racks along with peening and locks etc. there is no benefit to the steel for compliance.

These are an oddity that I'm wondering if anyone has encountered.

Steel because the shop couldn't MIG aluminum (more like faster). Shop on Ft. Dix made some up for my unit before deployment an did the bar mod on the M12's for the new issued (rebuilt) M4's. If you watch www.govliquidation.com you'll see them from time to time.

Now that's what I was looking for. While it was hard for me to believe an in house brew it seemed like the only explanation. Thanks for confirming. Dang that's a lot of work for something in the supply chain. I bought these on GL. Saw they were black but never dreamed steel!

Honestly, what do you use them for?... I know, putting guns on.... but that's not what I mean.

LOL. My Allied Trades shop fabricated all kinds of crap that could have been sourced through the supply channel or locally purchased cheaper and easier. The army doesn't make much sense.

Well, you don't just stack issue weapons in a safe. So, my vault (safe) was 20'x30'. All the weapon systems have their own racks (mod system now). It's chained to the wall an stacked on other rack an chained to them. If the Unit goes some place that weapons aren't carried but are needed they go in the racks. Then put in a 5T with armed GI, taken to another safe, stacked an chained. If deploying with weapons you still need extras if some break or you get new Joe's so you need racks for the extras and ten more racks for what ever gets turned in.

It's a hell of easier to load twenty full racks then pack 200 loose rifles.

Now, my privately owned racks are used for transport, range use (one out at a time the others are locked up) and storage in the shop.

Well, have you ever tried to get Gov approval to buy anything? It can take years. But, on Post/Base there are fabrication shops. Two types, ones run by Joe an one run by DOD civilians. The DOD ones charges Uncle Sugar for the work, Joe ones do the work fast if they have funds. Joe is getting paid if he welds or has KP.  What always got me was some Units have plumbers an carpenters but aren't allowed to fix or work on post housing, DOD contracts

I have an M12 but really wish I would have picked up one of those Hardigg transport cases that hold 12 rifles.

Found one on eBay, anybody near Fredricksburg,VA willing to pick it up and ship it for me?

Take a long weekend.

I work seven 12 hour shifts in a row every other week and play dad to my 3 and 7 y/o so no such thing as a long weekend for me anymore unless it involves something with or for them.
