Look at how tiny that sear pin looks - must have been 3/32 or some such on the early prototypes!

The book also has a nice section on early AR10's.  I seen it.

I wasn't aware that the AUTO position was towards the front, SAFE was in the middle, and SEMI was in the rear position.

That would drive me nuts. Glad they saw that and made the changes way back when.

The change was actually made during the development of the AR10 by the Dutch, if you drag the rifle there is the potential for the selector to be changed to auto unintentionally from safe since it was the down position. The selector positions were then copied by Colt who was accused of 'borrowing' many innovations developed by AI. The early modified AR10 transitionals and AR15 prototypes are notable by the milled recess restamped with the new positions.

The article says number one was long thought destroyed but found.....
I don't think they are talking about the wrong gun. I've read the one thought lost
Was the XAR-15-01.... The actual first AR made before the prototypes

That front sight base looks like it came off a Dutch AR10.  With the ears removed.

The Black Rifle says that the selector positions were redesigned by Eugene Stoner after the first batch of AR-15s were the subject of a March 1958 Infantry Board field test.

Part of the test involved soldiers carrying them through an assault course and, with the original selector positions, it was discovered that the selector could be inadvertantly switched to "AUTO" while the rifle was being dragged along the ground barrel-first. Stoner was directed to correct it, so he modified the change lever positions to the now familiar "SAFE-SEMI-AUTO."

Adam and Eve.

#0000000's front sight base has a dovetail on the top which had a sight attached that would adjust windage and elevation since the rear sight was fixed. I have a photo of a very similar sight but can't find it.
