Does anyone know if very early Type D stocks came without the rubber coating on the sling swivel or did they always have the coating from start of production?  I know C stocks had no rubber coating but I wasn't sure about early D stocks.

Yes, the earliest D stocks came without the rubber coated sling swivels.  The stock hardware is also a light parkerized color as opposed to the dark, almost black, Parkerizing that was used on the hardware with rubber coated sling swivels.  I know, because I have taken D stocks out of the original wrappers, and this is what I have observed.
