Just picked up another Anderson lower (while I can at the old prices) and plan on replicating this build I did in about 2010.  Am going to use a Colt N1 type Fiberite instead.  saves a bunch of weight over the aluminum.

I'm working on a very similar build right now.
I've got an Anderson lower and a Fulton 604 upper, not exactly "retro" but maybe "retro styled!"

I've got the M&A Parts CAR stock and a new A1 pistol grip from armalite.

What barrel is on that rifle? Right now I'm probably going to get a Del-Ton chrome lined lightweight.
The colt take offs are too expensive for me.

Brownells now has some 16 inch a1 spec barrels that are pretty nice.

I love it!

The quintessential lightweight "KISS" carbine!

If you want the look of the vinyl acetate aluminum stock, but, not the weight, get yourself one of the plastic CAR stock copies, sand it smooth then spray it with about 10 coats of Rustoleum gloss black.
Worked for my carbine!

I done a stock the same way

The barrel was a Model 1 Sales 16" pencil.  It was .750" under the FSB.  I got it for $149 from Midway USA when they carried them.  They dropped them and Model 1 Sales still has them for $189.  It is  very accurate barrel.  I actually shot 1.5" groups at 100 yards with that barrel!  It was an original 2 position aluminum Colt stock, and a 604 upper.

I'll use the CAR15 handguards and N1 type MA stock from my KISS carbine.  I still have the M4 stock group and M4 handguards to put back on the flat top KISS I have now.

Anyone know if Del-Tons are .750" under the FSB, or normal pencil barrel size?

Only in retro-land is a stripped lower, CAR15 handguards, and a CAR15 stock considered a good start on a build!

They are .750 under the fsb, we used it on my girlfriends rifle.

Sorry for the bad lighting.

Yep, those Del-Ton "pencil" barrels are only a pencil from the FSB forward.

My "tacti-cool" carbine has a Del-Ton upper with their lightweight barrel. It is .750" under the gas block and about .675" under the hand guards.
It's no porker, but, it is definitely a little heavier than the J&T lightweight on my 177E2 (and that's including the pinned/welded solid moderator!)

Is there anywhere to get those JT distributing  (doublestar) barrels other than brownells?

I can get a chrome lined Del-Ton "lightweight" barrel KIT for $240, whereas the chrome lined Doublestar barrel is $270 and I'd have to buy the rest of the parts to finish it.

It would be nice to have the correct profile, but I can't justify the price considering the accuracy of all the other "retro" parts on the rifle.

I bought my barrel directly through J&T, however, I noticed that they jacked the price of their barrels up by $60.00 since the weekend.

If you are looking for a lightweight carbine barrel for a decent price, check out ar15sport.com  They aren't chrome lined and only come in 1:9 twist (I don't know if those two things are important to you) but, the quality of their barrels is high and they are a great company to deal with. $189 and they don't gouge on their shipping.

Model 1 Sales are pencil fore and aft of the FSB, just .750 under it.

Well, broke down and ordered the Del-Ton CAR15 pencil barrel to go with the third Anderson lower, CAR15 N1 type stock, and CAR15 handguards. Not a bad buy for $154 including FSB!  Not my Colt 6420 barrel I had, but less than half the cost!

Del-Ton CAR15 barrel

Ive used the Non chrome lined Doublestar barrels and they are just fine, very accurate and lighter weight than the DelTon.
Both of these are Doublestars, I used a 14.5" for the 653 and a thick lock washer to bring the barrel with it pinned to 16"

I'm cheap, and not a purist, so I went with the Del-Ton.  Also ordered an M16 BCG from AIM Surplus today for $79.00 including shipping.

So I have:

-Lower Receiver
-Barrel
-gas tube and roll pin
-CAR15 Stock group with H buffer
-CAR15 handguards
-Bolt Carrier Group
-Grip

I will probably go with another Fulton 604 upper, since anything Colt is going for twice as much.....  I wanted to get the receiver, barrel and bolt carrier group right now, because when the panic sets in, especially here in California where all semis will have to be registered, those will be the hard parts to get.

What model does that first pic most resemble?

Maybe an Air Force rebuilt carbine?

I wanted to build one similar and the barrel has also been my biggest (in)decision.  I stupidly passed on a new Colt 6720 barrel in the EE for $200. And I have been kicking myself since... Analysis Paralysis

That  build was a replica of the GAU-5/P USAF carbine I had 1979-1981.  Mine had a 14.5" 1/12 barrel, this one had a 16" barrel.  Also, my issue GAU-5/P was on a 601 lower.
