I recently ordered a set of triangle HGs and a A1 grip from a fellow arfcom member. I expect to take delivery next week. If the HGs/grips show excessive wear I'm probably going to refinish them.  I'd like to know if the A1 handguards can be dyed. I see members doing this process to their MOE handguards and they look great.

I know the A1 HGs/grip can be refinished with duracoat, but I really don't want to go that route if I can avoid it.

Thanks for any recommendations.

You can buy NOS sets.

Eta: that would be new old stock stocks

Once you buy one set of A1 stock sets it snowballs from there. You will buy more and build more.

I know one of the members, I think username is VAAR, he has restored stocks, grips and handguards. Give him a shout and see what he uses.

No kidding. The build will be based on the 605, but with a modern twist.  For some odd reason I find myself completely fascinated with that platform.

Thanks for the info.

I don't think you can "dye" the early furniture. Think about it, the old furniture is of a completely different material than the Magpul furniture. Early furniture is fiberglass reinforced polymide(?) and the Magpul  furniture is made of polymer. I don't think the older material will accept the dye. Could be wrong though.

I've tried.  You can't dye it.

Try using some white polishing compound for car paint.  I've had great success doing this.  Short of that a new coat of paint may be your only option.

I recently cut a set down to make a set of mid length hand guards, they are black all the way thru so unless you can fugure out a way to bleach a set I'd think it would be fruitless to try and dye them. By the way, from the smell I'd guess there's Phenol and Uria was well as chopped glass in the set I cut from the so please wear a respirator if you're going to cut/sand on these.

THANKS for all the great advise, guys. I appreciate it very much.

White polishing compound..?? Over the counter, autozone type..?

I'll try that method first.

Just your typical Turtle Wax auto polish.  The white is finer than the reddish/orange.  Either will work.  I prefer to err on the side of caution.  Any auto place will have it.

I generally just degrease sand and paint with cercoat or alumnahyde. The look like new afterwards

It's good to know they can be brought back to life with little effort.  I'm pretty excited  about this project.

As long as they are not to heavily scratched a little light sanding with some fine grit sandpaper and then I use Mothers mag wheel polish that somebody on here turned me onto for some hand buffing. They will look new but you will end up with kind of shiny furniture. Not a problem but just so you are aware.

A a little modernish 605 motivation for you. I love the way this gun handles!

Excellent work, Banshee.

Does model designation change from "605" when a collapsible stock is used??

I have had good luck painting with Rustoleum semi-gloss black.  Tough finish.

Are you trying to fill/dye with black?

I accidentally dyed one after exposing the fibers. Like others have said though there is a wide variation of mixtures and materials used to produce the furniture. I believe my results were an exception to the rule.

this was a black hand guard originally.

Accidentally...

It was a well worn set I sanded it and went to polish with what I thought was tripoli... it wasn't and subsequently died the natural grain of the hand guard. I couldn't get it off with the solvents I had handy so I left it. It was a little pink in artificial light so I put some wood stain to it and it helped.

I don't know.

It looked like a chunk of tripoli, but it wasn't...I got in a lot from an auction with other buffing compounds and such. Its hard, brownish pink, and doesn't buff.

My handguards were delivered today and they are in pristine condition. There will be no need to refurbish them.

The A1 grip and 3 prong FH will be installed tomorrow.

Men, you were spot-on with your advise. I replaced the CAR stock with a A1 fixed stock and I really dig it. Should have done this from the get-go. It just feels better and more secure when shouldered. Not too bad on the eyes, either.

THANKS to all for the recommendation.

Nice gun.  I sincerely hope mine 2 retros turn out that well.

I am currently in the process of attempting to dye an M16A! "D" model stock.  If this does not work I have some stuff on order to do a refinish.  I'll post back up here with the results later.

Just to be clear, I did not Dye my A1 furniture. The set I purchased was GTG.

Thanks.
