It caught my eye reading the other Troy post. I guess they are reprofiling their modern lowers to the A1 profile, and that's fine, but some of the cuts are kinda crappy. Especially under the pivot pin. Have a look.
Don't get me wrong, the carbine looks nice, but with Troy's machining capabilities, couldn't it be perfect?

They should have had Braceman, or one of the other capable machinist on this forum to do their machinework.

The left side rear looked pretty decent on the ones at the NRA convention, the pivot pin boss was poor on all of them:

Yep, Nodak Spud has a much better cut at the front pin bosses...This was one of their first offerings when they were machining A2 lowers into A1's.  I think back then Mike did the final blending by hand.

Anyone can cut an A2 into an A1.

But nobody, other than Braceman or NDS has ever taken the time to do the finish work by hand so they look correct.

I still clean up the underside of the front lugs by hand.

Our forgings still have to have the radius "tightened up" under the front lugs.

Anchor Harvey didn't think it would fill correctly if we went with a small radius. You can see the difference in this pic.

If you look at the GAU5 pictures, it looks much better.

Yours are the best Mike . I'm still really happy with my black m16a1 lower and black 604 upper ! Thanks again for doing that for me! Just dropped my paperwork in the mail on Monday . It will be a long bunch of months before I get my stamp back

I have to say that from what I've seen, and the one of yours that I own, I'm quite happy with the work you've done.  My only grievance would be the safety detent hole on your 80% lowers.  It's easy enough to drill, but it's hard to drill exactly in the right spot and my measurements ended up being a few thousandths off resulting in a problem with the safety selector rubbing the side of the receiver.  I've finished several 80% lowers and haven't needed to drill this hole so it was surprising to me when I found it needed to be done.

But still, thanks for running a good business.  It's much appreciated.

In my viewing of the other post, and now this one...Yes the profiling was not quite as it should be. But, my big gripe that I haven't heard anyone say anything about was the horrible coating job they do OVER top of Black anodizing with a Cerakote finish. Look at the inside of the receivers, the finish doesn't even appear to go inside, it is simply sprayed outside with the two halves together, then baked. What a cheap shotty coating job that isn't even the correct color Gray.  To each their own I suppose, and perhaps its my OCD but Id never invest in something like that with its rush job finishing for that kind of money. I hope the functionality is better than the aesthetics of the weapon.

I agree I was a little turned off with the coating job appearance on the inside.  I know it is only cosmetic but you still would like to receive an item that not only functions great but looks just as great.  Definitely a little disappointed with that one aspect.

just goes to show much much nds cares about getting it right, even if it's the harder route with hand polishing and blems that come out of every batch.  troy and brownells took the most viable commercial route by going with black anodizing that is very consistent and a spray on coating which is consistent as well.

also shows how hard we retro-nerds are to satisfy.  brownells and troy will pass the smell test for 99% of folks at the range but that 1% makes our retro brains divide by zero
